Showcase Stack

Hi everyone,

I know some of you don't like pre-announcements however, I am just putting the finishing touches to my latest stack and wanted to show you what's coming up. The final release should happen within 24 hours.

My new stack is called Showcase Stack and, although it's in the slide show family, it's the most flexible and feature-rich stack that I've put together so far and it's much more than a slide show.

Yes, it is a bit more complex and one of the HUDs is quite long however, I think it's a small price to pay for a very flexible, elegant stack like this one. I hope you'll agree...

If you're interested, I've set up a few demos for your review.

I'll be back soon!

Cheers,
Mauricio

Edit: The Stack has been released. You can visit the product page and see for yourselves...

    And the Oscar goes to ...................................... MAURICIO!!

    Great stack. Can't wait to have it.
    I think it is one of the most flexible slide shows.
    Perfect for a portfolio, show your products, holiday pictures, or whatever.

    I like them all, the Polaroid effect is awesome for photographers.

    I have seen the demos on different browsers like IE7, IE8, FF, Safari and iPhone and they look perfect.

    Thank you Mauricio.

    Muchas gracias, saludos,

    Yolanda ;-)

    Is it possible to add links to the text beside the pictures or to the pictures themselves? Looks like a great stack.

    Very nice. What control do I have over the thumbnails? Can I control position and length of the thumbnails?

    Hi John,

    You have the following controls:

    1) Show/hide all the thumbnails
    2) Width of the thumbnail (the stacks calculates the height to maintain original aspect ratio)
    3) Number of thumbnails displayed at once

    In the current version, thumbnails can only be located at the top.

    Cheers,

    Mauricio, I just happened to be viewing the frontpage layout of this site and loved the setup. I didn't know that you had released this stack and I was hoping I could modify it to basically twin the site I pointed to, including the 1-2-3-4 boxes instead of nav image clips.
    Any chance for this?

    Cool...

    A feature request though... if you could dynamically resize the content area (like how light boxes do) so that we don't need to reduce the height of portrait images... would be cooler!

    Any changes on this as of yet? I do love this stack I'm just hoping that the ability to position the thumbs is in an update.

    Mike X

    ps. I don't really mind if the HUD is 3 feet tall.

    Thank you Mauricio.
    Until that magical day, how do I minimize the amount of space at the inside-top of the layout? The space that would be taken up by the Navigation or the Controls.

    In all of your demos there appears to be excess space at the top.

    I have both Nav and Control OFF but I'd love to shrink that area down a bit.

    Thank you again,

    Hi Mike X,

    Try this in Page Inspector]Header]CSS:

    div.caption-container {margin-top: 0px !important;}
    div.slideshow span.image-wrapper {top: 0px !important;}
    div#page {height: 400px !important;}

    The height of the div#pager (400px in this example) should be set to match the Image Height used in the HUD.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Mauricio

    Hi Mauricio,

    I have purchased RWExtras Showcase Stack yesterday.
    It looks great, so far, except few problems that i seem unable to solve so far.
    I couldn't find the answer in the tutorial - so please help!

    1. on the RWExtras Showcase Stack Demo web page you have this nice black arrow before the first and after the last thumb in a row, how can i do the same? I was unable to find an option that allows me to put the arrows before and after the thumbs.

    2. When the navigation is turned on the words " previous" and "next" are positioned to close under the thumbs, there is no space at all in between.
    I have tried to play with borders and paddings sizes, but nothing worked so far.
    So if i can have this nice black arrows i could turn "previous and next" off and the problem is solved.

    3. How to change the border line color around my thumbs ? Or even better - can i disable that feature? It keeps on showing, and always in black no matter what i do. Even when i zero all borders.

    3 The border line around the thumbs shows only on three sides (up, down and right side) left side has no line. It doesn't look nice. What am i doing wrong and how can it be fixed?

    5. After the last photo is shown, there appears loading wheel and keeps on going for ages. There are no thumbs, no navigation textor arrows and no photos, just the wheel.
    The autostart box is turned on and so i was expecting photos to be reappearing in a sort of loop, but no.
    Turning autostart off doesn't help either.
    How can i avoid that loading wheel and make the photos + thumbs reappear in a loop?

    I would be most grateful if you, or somebody here can help me with this,
    many thanks,
    karmela

    Hi Karmela,

    It would be helpful to see what you see otherwise it will be difficult to assist you. A link to your test page would help otherwise you can email me a copy of your actual RW project (including any assets) so that I can review it.

    From what you describe, you have issues with your setup. In addition, modifying paddings and margins just like that will cause problems unless you understand exactly how this particular stack works...

    Cheers,
    Mauricio

    Sounds good. In the meantime, make sure that the Showcase Content Stacks are dropped under each other. It's easy to drop them inside each other and that creates problems...

    Looks Great but - would be good to be able to center the thumbs over the image as they look slightly off center the way they are for me at the moment

    Hi Phil,

    By default, Showcase centers the thumbnails. Do you have a link so I can see what you see?

    Sure - the thumbs are centred within the whole box (text block and main image) but not centred over just the main image

    Hi Phil,

    As designed, the thumbs will center within the gallery. If you want to center them over the image, you can play with the following style after adding it to Page Inspector]Header]CSS:
    div.navigation {
    left:-350px !important;
    }

    Because of the way in which the navigation bar is constructed, a left position of 0 aligns the thumbs to the far right therefore you need a negative left to move it left. Just play with the values until you get the desired positioning...

    Not very elegant, but I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Mauricio

    Hi again Mauricio,

    I am sending you the link to my test page with showcase in it.
    It is a bit embarrassing to make it public at this early stage of learning and development, but since i am totally new to RW, stacks and showcase, i am not going to apologize, and just hope that not many people will look at it :)

    So the link :
    http://web.me.com/exorno

    In the meantime some problems are solved, and some new ones appeared.

    - the first and most important improvement is that i managed to get rid of the loading wheel. The photos are now appearing in constant loop. That's great, and it is so thanks to your tip about positioning of the content stacks.

    - the border around the thumbs is now showing on all 4 sides instead of only 3. It is an improvement, but the borderline is still only black, and i still couldn't figure out how to disable the border line around the thumbs or at least change its color.

    - The navigation text (Previous, next, pause, play) is now positioned much better, but it is underlined ( and i don't like that) and to small.
    This may have something to do with the theme i am using (rounded by multithemes), but anyway i would much rather disable navigation and use only those big black arrows before the first and after the last thumb in the row. Up till now i was unable to figure out how to do that. Can you help me?

    - As you can see, the new problem is positioning of the whole thing. I would like to move it higher towards the menu bar and more to the right. Is it possible, and is so how can i do it?
    Also i am wondering is there a way to better control position of the caption space? It is to far on the right and i just don't know what setting to change to bring it closer to the photo.
    I just saw your tips on moving the thumbs more to the left and above/over the image, so i will try that to.

    - The last thing , but not the least... is the size of the actual photos. How big can i stretch it without causing major loading time issues, what size would you recommend?
    It seems to me that although i determine the main image width and height to 500px (for example) the image appears smaller but there is empty space around it behaving like a link.
    IOW if you click the empty space at the left and right side of the image - it works like clicking the navigation button. I would like to stretch the image size to maximum and make the left and right empty space around it non-responsive.

    So this is it,
    hope you can help,
    many thanks,
    Karmela

    Short & happy update...
    I have managed to move the thumbs above the image (following the tip you gave to Phill), and in doing that the black arrow in the thumbs row appeared all by itself!!! Yeah!

    Remains to be solved :
    1.
    .border around the thumbs, and
    2.
    position control (thumbs close to the menu bar; image closer to the thumbs and more to the left; and caption closer to the image)
    3.
    maximum image size

    thanks again,
    karmela
