I've been looking through many posts on the Japanese and English forums, but not found decisive answers on the use of Japanese fonts.

I understand that the language setting for a RW site needs to be UTF-8. But beyond that what Japanese fonts are best to use? I'd like to have a fairly consistent look across OS platforms and browsers.

Osaka seems to be a crossover font (?), but I'm not a completely satisfied with the appearance.

MS Mincho, MS PMincho, MS Gothic, MS PGothic??

Are these the same as Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro & Hiragino Mincho Pro accessible in the RW "Websafe fonts" menu?
Are these crossplatform fonts that the majority of users would have?

Are there other fonts I might consider that would work for MOST users?

Thanks for the help with Japanese character encoding. It is very frustrating trying to make Japanese work on all machines, especially because RW will not let me change my encoding to WESTERN. At any rate, this is my problem. When I view my web site from Explorer 7 or later, the top page displays gobbledeeguk

Thank you for this information on Japanese fonts as well. I am in the process of starting to build a cross Japanese-English site and this knowledge will certainly come in handy.
