Hi all-

I am very proud to finally take the wraps off of JavabeanHosting.

JavabeanHosting aims to be a different kind of hosting platform. Instead of the big bland restrictive hosting providers, JBH is pre-configured for speed. Out of the box, PHP and Apache are tuned and optimized with compression ON. This is often neglected by many shared hosting providers because it puts increased strain on their servers. JBH isn't worried about this. We limit the amount of users per user to ensure that there is plenty of horsepower to go around. We also reserve the right to turn off new signups in the event that there isn't enough capacity. (This doesn't make great business sense and we realize this but we don't want to compromise our principles for the sake of a dollar.)

We want your site hosted on the best software platform backed by the best customer service (me!).

I'm one of the first JBH customers. Although JBH is more expensive compared to some other companies, you certainly get what you pay for. I've previously hosted with LittleOak and Bluehost and I've got to stand up and say that my websites have never loaded as fast as they do now. The performance is just incredible, and I would never have believed you could achieve something like this on a shared host. The migration to JBH was very simple and everything like contact forms and shopping carts continued to work perfectly.

Checking YSlow in Firefox, all of my sites are now achieving either an A or B speed rating

Interested in switching but curious as to what the control panel looks like!! Any chance to see screenshots of a demo of it maybe? I currently am with DH but have several sites that I am willing to move once I find just the right place!

Here is a screenshot of the Javabeanhosting control panel.

Very easy to use - all the main setting categories are displayed in tabs at the top, and the settings themsleves are displayed in a smaller bar immediately below, when you hover over each setting category. On most pages the individual settings are sorted into groups, and each group can be toggled open or closed. So for example if you are not using mail settings, you can click the arrow to close these settings.

As per my screenshot, you get a nice overview of your stats on the righthand sidebar. Overall the control panel is easy to navigate around and doesn't look like something that was developed in 1986! It is also very fast, compared with other control panels I've previously used.

And yes, the colour scheme of the control panel can be changed - choices include green, red, blue, turquoise, grape, orange, pink, yellow, grey and brown.

Thanks! I ended up using the free trial offer so I can test it out. I've never been a fan of cPanel but I must say this is quite nice! I've been spoiled by DH control panel for a long time now so takes a little bit getting used to tabs on top and not the side.

I wanted to chime in as a newish JavaBean user (one month now). I have free access to my university's server, but after awhile there were too many limitations for me going that route. My choice was javabean and I'm certainly glad I went in that direction! Greg's service has been fantastic. Setting up mySQL databases and some other issues were all new terrain for me. He got me up and running with those in no time.

The actual performance, as Will noted, is fantastic. To me it's not worth saving money if I'm not getting the same level of service. I absolutely know Greg knows his stuff, and is always on top of things, so that gives me great comfort.

I have run into odd situations where my previous server went on the blink at critical times. I don't have huge traffic (so could buy the javabean "basic" plan) but use my websites for courses and other educational purposes. Going down at the wrong time, or just being sluggish, can be a real buzzkill in my case. No worries about that with javabean!

Another very satisfied customer just tossing in their 2 cents.

1 week with JBH and quite happy with it. I think this thread deserves a bump. The Javabean plugin is unique and very handy.The MySQL backup stack might turn out to be a lifesaver one day. (Make sure you use it.)

• Should I enable GZip compression?
• Is the setting global across my primary domain and add-on domains? i.e.: Can I be selective with this setting?
• What are the pros & cons of compression? (other than increased server load)

I've already taken care of this for you (and all Javabean users). There is no need to touch it and yes it applies to all sub domains (as long as they're below your public_html folder and do not have any additional htaccess rules that override the ones I've created)

edit:
I care more about the sites on Javabean hosting having this feature than the server load .. this is why compression is on by default (enabled using htaccess not the cpanel). I will pay for a bigger server before I turn this important feature off

@goinup Thanks, I asked because there is a setting in cPanel which was initially set to "Disabled". I thought I had to explicitly enable it for my domains.

yes, i know. it's not really disabled. i have it enabled with a htaccess file. the htaccess file probably will overwrite that option anyway.

it should be safe to leave on but may break in older versions of IE that don't support compression.

Thanks for the clarification. I tried it at "Disabled" or "Compress All" and indeed the server is compressing the HTTP data on either setting.
