Whilst not wishing to sound negative in this this I believe an opportunity has been missed in not refining and making the new forum a lot easier and simpler. A lot of discussion went on another thread (check the post regarding Forum Ethics) where some people suggested stripping the forum down from the present 14 odd sub sections to a more manageable level. I hope this will be taken into account once the migration has been completed instead of the mess the forum is at present.

One thing that I appreciate about the new setup is that you can show all categories, or hide ones that you do not wish to read. On the old forum, I generally just selected to view new posts, and was presented with all new posts, including those in languages that I do not speak. I went through the list on the new forum and disabled the categories that are not for me, and now am not seeing the non-English posts when I view the Discussions tab. To me, that is an improvement.

Note to Nik: The button for category options that appears on hover is not aligned properly, and although it is still useable, it is partially cutoff at the bottom.

EDIT: I think you just addressed that issue, as it is a little oddly aligned now, but no longer being cutoff.

How are we supposed to post a link to something or display code? Many of the answers I provide here include specific code to help a user accomplish something. Am I just supposed to add the code as text?

Hopefully I'm just overlooking something here

    Hi Nik & Ben

    But ...,
I have no e-mail notifications with this settings ?!
It's very important for moderators job ;-)

    Hi Guys

As we can't merge forums, we went ahead and moved all the data over to the new system before we made any further changes.

Bear in mind that there's gigabytes of information that we had to move, and this is just the first step.

All the feedback hasn't been ignored - we've just had to make the biggest changes first.

    Thanks

    Nik

    Hi Team,
A few complaints. Sorry. This new user interface is way too busy. The "Categories" link does not work, Even though I opted out of any pop-ups in my notifications options (unchecked the pop up box feature), the annoying pop-ups still appear in my browser in the lower left hand corner. Can these issues I just mentioned be fixed?

    Thanks,
    John

What happens when you click it? If you're getting a "page not found" error, it's likely that your ISP has cached the DNS and hasn't pickup the new server settings yet. It can take 48 hours or so to update.

Not sure on this one (we didn't write the forum software, it's new to us as well :P). Try logging out and back in again.

    Migration Update
As you've probably noticed already, all the file attachments and avatars have been restored.

You should now be able to upload both attachments and avatars, let us know if you're still having issues.

So we've got all the data migrated and are now tiding up some loose ends and tweaking the settings and features.

I thought I'd just give you a quick bit of info about the new forum:

    Forum Software
    We're using Vanilla Forums.

    New Features

    - Questions
You can now either "Ask a question" or "Start a discussion". Asking a question allows you to "accept" or assign a specific reply as the answer that solved the issue you were having.

Starting a discussion is just a plain old post - you want to discuss something and don't need a specific answer to it - you just fancy a nice friendly chat about something.

    - Formatting bar above comments box.
Use the buttons or BBCode to format your posts.

    - File attachments available again.

    - Badges.
You'll automatically be assigned badges for your participation on the forum, such as post counts.

And, btw, how do you "quote" in Vanilla???

You need to change the 'hover' on the little tiny 'x' to delete/hide notifications. It's way to dark.

Nice to see the formatting bar back for new postings. Unfortunately, I'm still not getting notifications, even though I have all the boxes checked.

Also, can we get page numbers back for the posting overview, so you can go directly to the last page of a long thread? I don't see any page numbers until I have opened a specific thread.

Also, how do we spend our forum points? I have 52, and would like to know how many points I need to redeem to score a keychain or perhaps RW thong underwear?

Is there an RSS feed for the new forums?
  • shukapawshukapaw AlaskaPosts: 1,827Members
well, the new forums seem to be taking shape nicely. Many of the features that were missing seem to have been restored. I know this is a gargantuan task and I hope we can restore this forum to its glory days.

I saw this mentioned earlier but I'll restate the issue: You are unable to copy or paste within Firefox

Also, within IE (at least IE8) the "Post comment" button does not show up

I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in about the new forum system.

First, the look and feel is much smoother and efficient. The design goes so much better with the realmacsoftware.com website design. I think overall, it's 10x better due to its: speed, design, efficiency and awesome features. I love how after a few seconds, a post I am writing is saved as a draft and I get a little notification at the bottom of the browser window letting me know.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what else this forum software has to offer and I can definitely say one thing, I will be an active user from now on. All the reasons mentioned about how I love the new forums, are the exact reason why I wasn't active on the old forums - it was too slow and not efficient.

Overall: I love it and look forward to seeing the many features it has to offer! Great work!

So it seems like the spam problem is at least largely solved. Let's hope. I'm wondering about the number of posts, though, and it certainly seems like they are way down. Hopefully there isn't any correlation, except for the number of unwelcome visitors precipitously falling off.

I customized my results by clicking on the Options button next to each category. Now, when I select Discussions at the top, I see the most recent posts in my chosen categories. It's not how most forums seem to work, but it gets the job done.

Nice forum. After a few days I can imagine how it was in the past :-)

I keep getting a little box asking me to Accept or Reject an answer.
If an answer turns out not to be the actual answer - do I Reject it (seems awfully rude!) or Accept it (does that mean the thread is then closed) or do nothing (so does it matter, then?).

Shame none of the links in Google work (but obvious...) - double shame, though that cut'n'pasting part of the answer showing in the google search into your Search box comes up with nothing! It's as if all those past answers have dissipated into nothingness!

I've always liked Vanilla so I'm looking forward to getting comfortable with this new forum. A couple of concerns/questions:

I'm missing the Quote button to reply to a post. The only way I can figure to do this is to copy the post I want to quote and use the small quote button in the WYSIWYG editor.

Clicking on an image attachment doesn't popup the image as before. Is this functionality gone?

Can't figure out how to change my avatar. Is that still a work in progress?

Thanks and good work! I am in the process of transitioning from phpBB3 to IP Board so I can appreciate how much work you've put in here.
