E-commerce selling video downloads help

heatherallenheatherallen Posts: 6Members
Couldn't find a forum called 'Bitten off more than you can chew?', so am hoping this is the next best place.

Have been asked to create an e-commerce site, selling downloads of video files. At present, the person wanting the site hasn't decided on which format to convert files to for the download, but says there are about 150 of them ,and they're each an hour long.

I'm thinking the best RW addons would be RapidCart with Rapidlink, with the files stored online somewhere. (Spot the lack of technical language....) Can anyone recommend a reliable on-line file storage provider that works well with RC and RL?

Thanks for any help you can give - I've been skulking around in the background for months benefitting from the advice on the forums, and now I'm out in the open!

    Hi Heather,

Quick question: Are the files to actually be downloaded for the purchasers to keep or are the purchasers just buying access to view the videos?
If it's to view the files, then you need to use a 3rd party video hosting company to serve out the video in whatever format that matches the viewing platform (ie desktop, iPad, iPhone, Mobile PC, etc)
If it's storing files for download, then you are going to have HUGE files (for ex. a 720p video at std compress settings at 1hr long is over 8GB) The download times are going to be in the hours - customers are not going to be happy. Even w/ compression, you've got a big problem/question for your client - do they really want to subject people to download times like this?

    Hope this helps a little.

    Bill, you're a marvel.

Thank you so much for your reply - I'll go back to my client and see what she wants to do!

    Happy Friday!

    Heather
