I have a request : please add “Meiryo” font in the RW’s default Japanese fontset. More precisely, it should be :

“ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3”, “Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro”, “メイリオ”, Meiryo, Osaka, “ＭＳ Ｐゴシック”, “MS PGothic”, sans-serif;

instead of the current set :

“Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro”, “ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3”, Osaka, “ＭＳ Ｐゴシック”, “MS PGothic”, sans-serif;

(i.e. 2 entries corresponding Meiryo font (both in Japanese and English) are added)

Background :

Simply put, OS X’s default Japanese font is Hiragino, which is not installed on windows system as default. Likewise, Windows has Meiryo as default font which is missing on Mac. The current RW set is good as far as OS X is concerned, but results in jaggy and ugly text in other systems. By adding Meiryo after Hiragino, reasonable results can be obtained on every system.

(MS PGothic and Osaka are older bit-mapped fonts, which come with Win XP or earlier, and Mac OS 9 or earlier, respectively.)

Why 2 entries ? Yes, actually メイリオ is Meiryo as is the case of “ヒラギノ　...” and “Hiragino ...”. It’s because Safari ignores Japanese font name while Firefox only understands Japanese names. :(

I understand that the language setting for a RW site needs to be UTF-8. But beyond that what Japanese fonts are best to use? I’d like to have a fairly consistent look across OS platforms and browsers.

Osaka seems to be a crossover font (?), but I’m not a completely satisfied with the appearance.

MS Mincho, MS PMincho, MS Gothic, MS PGothic??

Are these the same as Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro & Hiragino Mincho Pro accessible in the RW “Websafe fonts” menu?
Are these crossplatform fonts that the majority of users would have?

Are there other fonts I might consider that would work for MOST users?

Can somebody please advise me?  Especially somebody who is familiar with Japanese trends.  The site is for a women’s religious congregation here in Tokyo.  A basic site with several text style options, a photo gallery or so, movie clips, a contact form, maybe a blog in time when I get more familiar with RW itself.  Basic right!  But the Japanese-English part is a necessity.
