Hi,

I am trying to narrow down what is going wrong with my site build and I am at the point where I am getting very despondent.

I bought the Supersized Theme, built 3 sample pages, changed some of the CSS to allow for a bigger navigation and used web fonts that my client requested. It works in Safari and Firefox but not in Internet Explorer.

The site is http://www.jenniferglover.co.uk/powells

So, I’ve gone through and systematically removed everything. Stripping it back right to it’s bare bones. I’ve used the original theme (ie not my altered duplicate) and taken off the web font link and I am still getting unpredictable results in Explorer. The logo doesn’t come up and I am getting weird dividing lines as shown in the Explorer 6 screen grab attached.

The site is http://www.jenniferglover.co.uk/test

Is this me or Explorer and how do I progress from here?

I have a client who wants a visual in Explorer tomorrow and I am panicking.

Jennifer

Hi

Have you checked the developers preview site in IE?

If that displays fine then you know that it is something you have added.  Having had a quick look at the preview site (in safari) it says the site works in IE7 and above therefore if IE6 is a requirement then it may be better looking for another theme.

No need to worry as far as I can see. Here’s a screenshot of your site in IE 7. looks pretty good.
Supersized is NOT compatible with IE 6!
Compare your own site with Lucas’ demo site for Supersized, it looks even better than his! wink

Hi Jennifer

It’s time for you to make a decision, either:

1. Drop any kind of support and commitment to ie 6 (like the majority of the web community) and be able to deliver something great.  grin

2. Continue to try and support IE6, deliver something 2nd rate, continue to give yourself pain, anguish and suffering that your client won’t appreciate, and won’t pay for.  :-(

When you have chosen 1 (like you should) if you want to absolve yourself from any kind of any remaining misplaced guilt, install Joe Workman’s browser reject stack. which is FREE.

ie6 is the Dead Parrot of browsers, it’s been nailed to it’s perch too long….

Regards

Mark

Apart from the suggestion of using the browser reject stack I think this advice is more simplified than helpful.
- IE6 limits us in many ways, that’s true. But wether a website looks great or not does not necessarily have to do with IE 6. There are thousands of wonderful websites around that display nicely in IE6. Don’t let technology be an excuse for poor creativity. A website isn’t “good” just because it uses modern techniques and it isn’t “bad” just because it respects old and poor browsers.
- Wether you decide to drop IE6 support should most of all depend on your audience. I have been designing a few websites for complementary therapists (homoeopathy, tcm, massage etc.) with a more or less “alternative” audience. These people are everything but tech-aficionados and don’t easily hop upon each new browser version that comes strolling along. If I wouldn’t respect this fact and design something that kicks 40% of my client’s visitors out, I’d be doing a poor job.

Very fair comments Markius, I agree it is about choices - my experience has been that many people don’t realise they are using an old browser until it is pointed out to them, and they get a much improved ‘experience’ across the web when they do upgrade.

Hopefully what we can agree on is that it isn’t unfair for a theme developer to chose to drop support for older browser technology, to enable they to offer something new (like Supersized) and reduce their support overhead, as long as any browser requirements are clearly stated.

Similarly a client commissioning a web site can’t expect to get something ‘new and different’ without their being some browser constraints, again it is about choices.

I anguished abut ie6 support for a long time, the recent decline in published user figures for ie6 and the browser stats I was from the sites I support lead me to choose to drop ie6 support - since then I’ve reduced both my support and testing pain.

Agreed. I’ve bought Supersized myself and intend to use it soon, but for an audience where I can be sure they’re not using IE 6.

As long as it works for your audience, fine.
Of course I do believe IE6 is a pain in the a… as well. Every developer does. And I’m happy about declining user figures as well. It’s just that some audiences are slower than others. Lucky you if you’re not into those wink

Hi Markus,

I’m sorry I never replied to yours or anyone else’s responses here â?? I have had my head down trying to suss this thing out.

Is there any chance you could do me a massive favour, please?

You were the only one who could view the site properly in IE7. Adobe browser lab just shows me a blank screen. I am still having them same problems. Could you just check how this new test looks in IE7 for me. I am trying to narrow down where the problem lies.

If possible a screen shot would be lovely.

Many thanks

hi Jennifer,

that is strange. The new site doesn’t display in IE7. I get a blank screen and an error message.
I tried several versions of IE7 and IE8 as well, same result.
When I fired up IEtester (an all-in-one-solution for different IE types in one app) it gave me an error message with a little more details:
“There was an error in the script (line 1, letter 5470, invalid procedure call or argument).
URL: http://fast.fonts.com/jsapi/6ed19d14-165c-4d34-b0f0-3a219bd2afb0.js”

I don’t know that script, but in case it is something you added into the theme, it might have resulted in a JS conflict. I would suggest to delete it and try again without the script. If the script comes from the theme, I would suggest to contact Lucas.

Hope this helps you a little…

Hi Markus,

I must admit, Lucas has been very kindly helping me. He can get it to work on his site but I am failing miserably. I really am at the end of the road, I think.

Thanks so much for you help.

Oh. Did you send him your project file? If so and if he can get the same site working on his server, this means that it might be a server issue. If that’s the case you should maybe contact your provider.

No, I didn’t send him my project file. I think he did it with one of his own.

I guess I must just being doing something stupid.

I will email him your suggestion because you are correct, the line of code I added comes directly from the web-fonts site.

Thanks again.

Jennifer
