Dev Diary Ep69 - Huge Update

Hi @Mr.B2,

The Open Recent menu option of all Mac software (including RapidWeaver) only keeps a list of the files you opened last in this application and where it was stored at that time. If you move or delete the file using macOS (Finder), the Open Recent list doesn’t get updated and the link between the list and the actual file is broken.

In other words, it looks like that file isn’t where it’s supposed to be.

If you press CMD+Space, and then type the file name, macOS should look for it outside of RapidWeaver. Two things can happen:

  1. MacOS finds the file:
macOS will display the file in a list of search results. Double click on it, and the file will open in RapidWeaver.

  2. MacOS can’t find the file
This means that the file is not on your Mac. In that case, try to recollect what you did with it (store it externally perhaps, or got rid of it in a cleanup frenzy maybe?).

If you have the file stored off your mac (USB stick, hard drive) insert that volume and double click on the file itself - RapidWeaver should open the file without issue.

If you deleted the file at some point in the past, and don’t make regular backups of your computer, then I’m afraid that macOS won’t be of any help and your only hope is backups of your computer or file.

Cheers,
Erwin

You are Heroic to tackle helping me (Mr.B2).

I somehow followed the directions and did a type in the address’s from this window:

Into the Cmd + Space search window — it found the files, they opened and now show in RWC. That surprised me that I managed that. I was pleased.
The 5th one down which had to do with something I paid for and tried to use (did not manage to understand it) it would not open - gave a stack overrun
error message. That is ok - it was a wild in the dark experiment of mine, wanted to make it work .. I couldn’t. No problem.

So, the files were on the desktop on my iMac. I had a folder for BACKUPRAPIDWEAVER just for this - something DamG and Bill levered me into.
Thanks Dan and Bill. I think they may be stored in other places including the cloud? I am not sure.

So — you pulled me out of that rut.

Now for you and the Dan’s and Bill — should I just take the leap and get Elements so I can fiddle with that one for another year or so.
My fiddling has nothing to do with anything important, no business, just as a way to share family stuff with family and friends.
I do not want to be a drag on the forum. There is some pretty sophisticated stuff that goes on here. Pretty solid and high company all
doing some pretty neat stuff. All of it is over my head — I subscribe anyway.

If Elements is truly WYSIWYG, plus a video and reading instructions a little bit then I might be a good test dummy?

I do want to support the community as they have been super kind to me.

Thanks. I feel good about being able to open that little web/blog thingy. I thought it was a goner for sure.

:person_bowing: It isn’t much, but it was fun and the kids, friends and Lady Ann (94) did enjoy the darn thing.

73 & Thanks Erwin.

Hi @Mr.B2,

Asking questions to get ahead is not considered a ‘drag on the forum’ by any means. This forum is here to help people who have questions after all! So no worries and ask away.

As for Elements - You’ll find that Elements is different from what you’re used to in a few ways, and similar in others. There is a learning curve for those who come from the classic version of RapidWeaver (less so if you used Stacks, like you do, but still there).

The differences are an improvement on what came before though. @dan has put up some excellent videos on how Elements works, so you can see for yourself before you take the leap and buy the app.

Do keep in mind that Elements isn’t compatible with your old projects - so you’re going to have to start over on any website that you decide to bring to Elements.

Cheers,
Erwin
