I have just heard the sad news of Chillidog’s sale to Exact Hosting. Like many others whose sites have been hosted on Chillidog servers for many years, I always found Greg and his colleagues helpful and highly responsive. I am very grateful for their assistance, tolerance and constant good humour. I am sure they will be missed but wish each of them every success in their future endeavours.
From a quick glance at Exact Hosting’s pricing plans, they appear to charge more for less. I hope I am wrong and look forward to hearing what they have to offer to customers like me.

Yep you are on there! Just a heads up, the Early Testers will be on our UK server. I saw you were looking for other locations from the poll I posted the other day.
If you have a site you don’t mind sticking on the UK server for testing, we can absolutely get you on there though. Let me know.
In Germany, we already have very good hosting providers, and compared to other European providers, the conditions are also quite competitive. Therefore, the most important question for me is whether there is already a rough plan for what the hosting pricing will look like.
As mentioned previously though, we aren’t going to be competing in a race to the bottom on pricing. Our pricing will reflect the level of customer support, care, performance, and tight integration with Elements hosted sites that we offer.

We haven’t locked down pricing yet, but based on that table I’d say our 1st level will be similar to their Premium level, our 2nd level will be similar to their Business level, and then we will have a 3rd level that is outside of what they have on their table. Again we haven’t locked things down though. We’ll have more information coming soon.
One thing to note though, we will not be offering Email hosting, as our focus will be strictly on website hosting. We have recommendations for affordable email hosting for those that need it.

I’m currently hosting my websites with a German provider and I might consider moving them to your upcoming elements hosting, if the price and the quality / speed (no doubt about the service) is at least on the level of what I currently use.
But I’m sill a whee bit cautious because of the f*cking GDPR. So… from a GDPR perspective, my understanding is:
• The GDPR applies regardless of the physical server location, as long as personal data of EU users is processed.
• Hosting within the EU/EAA is generally unproblematic, as GDPR applies directly.
• Hosting in the UK (post-Brexit) is currently allowed, since the EU has issued an adequacy decision for the UK, meaning data transfers are permitted without additional safeguards at this time.
• For any hosting outside the EU/EEA without an adequacy decision, additional safeguards (e.g. Standard Contractual Clauses) would be required.
As a site owner, the key points seem to be:
• A GDPR-compliant data processing agreement (DPA) with the hosting provider
• Appropriate technical and organisational security measures
• Transparency in the privacy policy regarding server location and data processing
Based on this, hosting in the UK or elsewhere in Western Europe should currently be GDPR-compliant, provided these requirements are met.
I’d be happy to hear if Realmac can confirm this understanding, especially regarding DPAs and long-term plans for additional EU server locations.
