Enable to publish

Sorry that I post this here again, but I didn´t get any ideas in the other thread…

Hi from germany. Updated to Big Sur last night, since then I have problems with publishing an existing page (just made a simple change) --> RW crushes. Starting over again --> crushes.
Next I started a simple new project, entered all publishing details, tested the entered details and the publishing worked superfine!
So I got back to my main and important project, entered a second destination (“Add new destination”), deleted the first one - saved - and of course it crushes immediately when trying to publish.
What can I do? Thank you in advance and sorry for my english…cheers, elch26 (BIG SUR & RW 8.7)

I just tried to publish/export my project to a local folder --> RW crushes and shuts down. Asks for restart or sending an report to Apple.
What else can I do? Where do I find something like an “crush report” to send this to RW?
I am really lost :o(
Thanks for any suggestions in advance

@rasavol and @elch26,

Since both of you are unable to publish to a local folder, my best guess is that your project file has gotten corrupted.

It’s probably time to pull an older backup copy of the project file from TimeMachine(or whatever you use for backups).

Ilja, you kind of proved your problem is related to the single project file.

Hello teefers,
I did what you advised, went to time machine and reinstalled the project. But it is the same result :o(
On the other hand: I tried to publish another project - and it worked. Have no idea, why this (most important project for me) cannot be published…

You can make a new project and then copy and paste the pages from the old project to the new one. Then add the publishing settings manually to the new project and try again.

I used the last backup version from TimeMachine to publish my Site. The result is the same: Unable to export. Although the support logs are marked in the settings, they cannot be retrieved. Therefore the following message appears.

I can’t upload either DevMate, a outdated program, which will be taken off the net soon. I also tried the suggestion to start a new project. I have copied the home page and tried to upload: Publishingtest succesfull as usual, only publishing is impossible here too. What a mess! The support team Dan and Aaron are quiet. I understand that they have more important things to do. For me it means losing a website that has been maintained for years.

The test button on publishing settings only test the very basic server credentials. Once you have “passed” the test it means you can login to the ftp sever with the user name and password provided.

If the only thing in this new project is that single page and it’s still not able to export, then there’s either something about that page or something about your Macs setup that’s causing the issue.

So let’s start a process of elimination.

  1. Start a new project
  2. Select one of the delivered themes for RW8 (maybe mountain)
  3. Put a single page on it (maybe styled text
  4. Try to publish to a local folder.

Post back what happens.

Above I gave you a link to a knowledge base article on fixing ftp problems. If you followed the entire article it explains how to get RealMac support involved and what information you’ll need to provide them.

From the message that you are getting, it looks like devmate is creating issues with getting the log files. Since it’s outdated why don’t you uninstall it?

I find most of those type utilities that hook into other software to create a lot more problems then they solve.

thank you for your reply. I followed the advices in “How to fix ftp problems”. Without success. DevMate was never on my Macbook. I wonder why Mac provides the abouve message after trying to get the support Logs, which Aaron asked in trying to help.

What versions of RapidWeaver and are you using stacks and if so what version?

Did you try this? It should only take a couple minutes. What exactly happened when you did?

I did your 4 steps mentioned. The publishing to a local folder was successful.

I went back to my main project, controlled everything (website-name …) once again. No chance to become able to publish. The connection test successful as usual. Bildschirmfoto 2020-11-19 um 19.06.24
Then publishing starts for some seconds, than the messageBildschirmfoto 2020-11-19 um 19.06.41
Then I go for the support logs and I get this (I have never installed DevMate on my laptop, I don’t know what this program is and why its name appears in a RapidWeaver-Message):

I managed today to use a htaccess file, so my customers aren’t confronted with a halffinished chaotic site. They are linked to the Siteshop, which is a Ecwid-Add, which has no need for change at the moment. https://das-seminar.ch

What shall I do? It is now 2 weeks since I published the last time a modivication of the project. I am using RW for about 10 years.

So a simple project local publishing works, but your main project fails?

Without knowing all the plugins (page types) you are using on the main project it’s difficult to say for sure what is causing the issue. Let’s continue with are process of elimination.

First off, what kind of pages are you using(stacks, formloom, styled text, blog)?

For addon plugins like stacks what versions are you using?

What macOS version are you using?

If you are using stacks 4, did you take the latest release Stacks 4.1.2?

Once you have answered these questions, then I’d probably make a copy of the project, set it up to publish locally (if you can’t publish locally then you won’t be able to publish remotely, so no point in wasting the extra time.

I have no idea how many pages you are using or what kind so it’s hard to say what to eliminate first, but you could start by deleting half the pages. Try to publish locally, if it fails then you know the problem is in that half, if it publishes okay then the problem is in the half you deleted.

Anyway you can keep cutting the remaining pages (with the problem) in half until you find the bad page.

If you have a small number of pages then you can also right-click each page one at a time an select publish.

Try these: test after each step.

  1. Disable all plugins that you’re not using – yes even plugins that you’re not using get loaded (Ex: PlusKit loads Find Plus even when there are not PlusKit pages in your document).

  2. Make sure to update to the very very latest. There are a lot of updates happening right now (mostly my fault, sorry about that) – but the good news is that most problems are getting resolved. So update everything you can.

  3. If you are using some plugins, disable them. Then test. If things work, re-enable your plugins one at a time – there usually aren’t too many, right?

Now that you've tested you should have a better idea what is causing the problem, here's what to do with that knowlege:
  • If the problem happens even with no plugins installed (unlikely – most of the problems I’ve seen in the past week are due to changes in the RW Frameworks that broke some older plugins) – but on the unlikely chance that the problem still occurs after all plugins are removed, then it’s time to send your project over to the folks at Realmac to have a look.

  • If you discover that the problem is one (or more) of you plugins, then let the plugin developer know (it might be me) and send them your Project along with the what you were doing at the time (obviously you were Publishing/Exporting – but I’m hoping this helps some other people having similar but different issues too).

  • Last but not least, if you have a Stacks issue, then you should probably pack up your all your addons so that we’ll have your stacks to open your file. You can do this by following these instructions.

Good Luck! I’m sure we’ll get this all sorted out soon.

Thank you Teefers so much. There are good new suggestions for me to go on trying to find the problem. The project is using styled text pages, blog, and stack 4.1.2. Total 15 pages, 5 aren’t shown in navigation. I will let you know if I managed to solve publishing !

And the same thanx goes to Isaiah Carew

Do you mean with “removing” the plugins the same as “enabeling” them. Or mark them as “unchanged” before publishing?? - I marked all the pages (without the simple Home-page, which hasn’t any important content) as unchanged and tried to publish to a local folder. That provoked the “unable to publish”-message!?

How do i really “desable” plugins? Delete them from the project? Or can I do this in some preferences?

In the addons manager (button on the toolbar) simply select Plugins and uncheck them:

After you uncheck items to disable plugins RW will ask you to re-launch RW.
After that, please double check to make sure items are still disabled.

On two occasions now, I’ve found users that can’t disable their plugins – in both occasions they had a copy of the plugin in the Disabled Plugins folder and one in the main addons folder.

I suspect that condition confuses the addons window. Although I don’t know what causes that condition. Maybe installing it again? Maybe they have slightly different file names? I’m not sure. But worth double checking if you are still experiencing problems.

thank you Isaiah and Teefers. I disabled the plugins, that wasn’t a problem. Enabled again. Whatever I do, publishing on the local folder isn’t working. - What I need now, is someone, who give it a try in connecting via TeamViewer for instance to look at the settings and solve the problem. I would like to pay. Is there nobody in the Realmac-Team responsible for tough problem solving? Aaron, Ben, you or you ? Thank you…

if you send your project file to me and capture the state of your addons folder then i can do one better – i can see what you’re seeing, but on my machine with a debugger enabled, which is what’s really necessary to understand problems like this. simply witnessing them is not usually sufficient to fix tough problems – development tools let run things in slow motion and peer inside the code while it’s working (or in this case, not working).

Here’s how to capture the state of your addons folder, which is necessary for me to get the full picture of what’s going on:
