With the help of RW I think I have created a wonderful site - with only one flaw: the favicon.ico looks strange in a Safari tab (s. picture). Any ideas, please? Thanks in advance.

Hi @Chris-Belwinds,

If the favicon only looks off in Safari, then it’s because of Safari’s built-in auto contrast feature. This feature reduces the number of colours when thwy are close to each other (different shades of red for example) and inverts others to increase the favicon’s contrast for better visibility.

If the icon looks off in other browsers as well, then there might be something wrong with the image file.

My bet is that it’s Safari’s auto contrast feature though.

Cheers,
Erwin

It’s only in Safari. So what could I do? Thanks so much!

Hi @Chris-Belwinds,

Safari does this all by itself when it thinks your favicon lacks contrast.

You can remedy this by designing a favicon that already has contrasting colours. Not much you can do otherwise I’m afraid.

But do keep in mind that most visitors will use some variant of Chrome/Chromium rather than Safari, so how much of an issue is it really?

Cheers,
Erwin

I’m on Safari 17.2.1 on this machine.

I’ll check tonight on one of my machines running 17.4.x.

With the latest update of macOS and Safari the funny look is gone. Thanks for the assistance!
