PNG file larger than the original

I understand that for jpg files, a different compression setting may make the “compressed” file larger, but what’s happening with png files? The only two options are Zopfli and crush and both result in a file larger than the original png. How could that be?

Also, while the resize option is not selected, the resulting file has a different size than the original. But even if I force the width to be the same as the original, the resulting file is still larger. It’s in fact, much larger in size.
