I have a post using the CMS to which I add a photo. The photo needs some space, so I try to add a line in the editor, and it looks good in the editor: (I have also tried to do the same using the Markdown editor.)

 ![image](https://europe1.discourse-cdn.com/flex005/uploads/realmacsoftware1/original/3X/9/4/945f89449efd1556c895f8cd05c612ee8d950c18.png)

Then I save and on the web page, there is no space between the photo and the text:

![image](https://europe1.discourse-cdn.com/flex005/uploads/realmacsoftware1/optimized/3X/9/2/9294b08557a2638fa1135e8275dd98230ad49429_2_690x59.png)

The Gitbook assistant is of no use to help with this. How do I add a line between the text and the photo in the CMS interface? Even adding a horizontal rule does not work.

I also had a long fight understanding that filenames with spaces give the CMS interface a lot of trouble, while the Elements interface has no problems. Please make it handle filenames the same way.

I assume that your text is Markdown. The Theme controls what happens with line spacing.

Thanks for the input, Thom. I made the text+photo using the Wysiwyg editor, where it shows correctly, but apparently it does not respect the strange theme controls where text and objects are treated differently, and is not even able to add a line before a non-text-object. (`<br> `does not work either)

This needs a small change of code, I would say.

If the wysiwyg editor is not wysiwyg, then it is very difficult to have non-nerdy customers working with it.

This is where seeing the Project itself is helpful. While I understand what you’re saying, we need to see it in context to understand why you’re seeing what you’re seeing.

You wouldn’t add a
in a Text/Typography component, because that’s HTML, not text. Are you saying you can simply add a carriage return at the end of a text item in WYSIWYG?

I can do this:

text

text

with a carriage return, but I cannot do this:

text

photo

text

the latter comes out as:

text
photo
text

I can even try to make a `<hr>` using the tools in the text bar like this in the editor:

 ![image](https://europe1.discourse-cdn.com/flex005/uploads/realmacsoftware1/original/3X/9/7/97a70e61f20c80e4c00399af7f971fd39407f2c6.png)

but it disappears in the post on the web page.

as you can see, no break. I have a feeling that the tool bar that allows for photos, horizontal rules, etc., is just an easy solution that was found somewhere by AI and pasted, and now giving a lot of unanswered questions.

But you may have a point that I should be able to control the margin or padding in the text item which holds the content. I tried to change it to a typography item, but to no avail. I am aware that text and typography items normally do not contain pictures, but if the possibility exists for a user, the user will use it and be as frustrated as I am right now. .

Sorry this is frustrating, especially when it looks right in the editor and then collapses on the live page.

Additional line breaks won’t reliably add spacing above/below photos when you’re using the Online Editor in Elements CMS. Blank lines between text can create paragraphs, but around images those empty breaks tend to get collapsed or stripped on publish, so they don’t turn into the margin you’d expect.

You’ll need a bit of custom CSS on the component that’s rendering the CMS content to set spacing between text and photos (margin on the images is the usual fix). If you need help with that, please let me know and I can send over some code 🙂

As the editor is only for my customers, I think you should consider fixing this.

I can work around this in elements, but if I give this interface to my customers, they will run screaming away, literally.

The funny thing is that this editor in the forum, respects lines between objects.

I will consider fixing it with css, but it is far from ideal for a CMS where the posts have to be easy to work with, sorry.

I’ve also had some issues with the same thing. I can use the Markdown section and enter code to create breaks and maybe adjust layout (for example, to centre a certain paragraph), but this all gets taken away in the WYSIWYG view (and doesn’t come back on returning to the Markdown side). As a post is always opened in the WYSIWYG view, this is somewhat annoying.

I’ve also had examples of H2 text displaying as ## Heading and H6 text as ###### Sub-heading when going from Markdown view to WYSIWYG view.

I have used CSS to style things that I want styled in every blog post, and this works well.

To me this problem looks like the famous, a.k.a. disreputable, problem of Markdown with blank lines. I hoped the online editor should have solved this for us, but apparently it hasn’t. For the time being I’ll keep writing my posts in Typhora, importing them in Elements and then publish them. For now the CMS online editor is a non-go for me. Alas.
