Whenever the developers start getting greedy and switch to the subscription system, my reaction is to support the hacked version of this app.

If they ask me for direct support, I would find it more natural, but these kinds of small games irritate me.

While Rapidweaver Classic has updated content that can’t go beyond a normal update, it made me very uncomfortable that it was presented as a new application.

Currently, I have installed the hack version on top of the legit version and I am using it. I don’t think I will support RapidWeaver from now on.

> That really depends on your definition. After one year updates stop. Traditional licenses gave you updates for each major release. Once updates stop you don’t get bug fixes in the version you bought. This means you need to essentially pay every year, which imo is a subscription.

Thanks for the feedback, it’s saddening to read comments like this when it’s clearly misguided.

RapidWeaver Classic is not subscription-based. You can **buy it once and use it forever!**

There is NO subscription.

There is NO automatic recurring payment.

We think this model is better for ALL our customers as it allows us to push out new features as we go, there’s no more disappearing for six months to a year to build the next big version.

You can choose when you want to update. Maybe you wait two years and then buy an upgrade. Maybe you wait until you see a feature you like the look of then upgrade.

This puts the power back in the customer’s hands. You can buy when you think there’s an upgrade worthy of your money.

Keep an open mind and I think you’ll look back in a few years and think this was actually a great move after all.

Are you using a hacked copy of RapidWeaver Classic? Could we have a copy of that version?

We’d be very interested to see how it works. You can message us here on the forum.

@svsmailus I hate to write this … but you seem to be the definition of delusional.

Yes, you can look at something that is red and insist it’s green. It’s your right to be … delusional.

The difference is really quite simple … not sure why you can’t understand that difference. Several other companies do the same pricing approach as RM. For example, Curio uses this approach and has done so for about 6 years. If after 1 year of updates I don’t want to update again that’s fine. Curio still works! I base my upgrade of Curio on how many significant (for me) features have been added to the software. In practice that means I typically upgrade about every 3 to 4 years. But all that time I have not upgraded I can still use the software and it does a great job.

A subscription, on the other hand, is something where when you stop paying the subscription you no longer have access to the software. It’s a vastly different setup.

I get that you might be unhappy with RW Classic for various reasons. That’s fine. But if you insist red is really green I hope I never see you driving a car!

What a patronising statement to write. As if you opinion was the full sum truth of the matter. The whole issue of subscriptions is a massively debated issue. Your definition is one favoured by developers and not a universal definition nor one held by many users. There are obviously a lot of “delusional” people about. As a lot of users would call this a subscription. I stopped using Curio when it turned subscription. I appreciate that developers understand people’s aversion to subscriptions and attempt to change the terminology, but it amount to semantics.

> [@dan](#):
>
> You own the version of the RapidWeaver app you paid for.

What version would that exactly be? Certainly not 9.0. It all depends when you stop paying.

A traditional licence ie RW8, gave you the version you paid for 8.x. Whatever updates were made to v8 you received. This license does not give me all of v9. It gives me v9.x until I stop paying. If a bug in v9.3 is discovered 11 months into my subscription and I don’t renew and the bug is fixed in v9.4 released 13 months later, I’m left on v9.3 with the bug.

Developers may not call this a subscription, but to a lot of end users that is exactly how they see it.

I’m not unhappy with RW Classic. I’m unhappy with this whole debacle generated by RW and YourHead trying to convince users 3 apps are better than one.

Now who’s delusional?

Unfortunately, this effort to protect the developer does not change the fact that the app includes a hidden subscription model.

… and where did I write that 3 apps are better than one? I certainly don’t think that. In fact I won’t be purchasing RW Classic at this point as there are so many unknowns. Certainly not worth it for me until the landscape becomes much clearer.

If I came off as patronizing it was because I was being patronizing. I’m never sure how to respond to undiluted wackiness so I suppose patronizing is part of my response.

BTW I can understand if you are unhappy with the new pricing model. That’s okay. I’m just taking umbrage at you calling it something it isn’t.

Neither us nor YourHead is trying to convince anyone that 3 apps are better than 1. We’ve never stated that.

Right now, we recommend users carry on using RapidWeaver Classic and Stacks, it’s a great combo that both software companies are supporting for the foreseeable future.

If you like the way RW+Stacks works, great, carry as normal. There’s no need to change or move to any other piece of software.

Please stop trying to drum up drama where there isn’t any.

Do you think Apple has “free” software updates? Guess what, they don’t. It is the same model as RM is doing. The difference is that if you want some of the weezbang new dodads that the latest OS update supports you need to have compatible hardware. For instance, I have an iPad Pro that is a few years old and it will not support the new Stage Manager feature coming this fall. Am I disappointed, sure. But that is progress, they are not a charitable organization. THEY ARE A BUSINESS THAT WANTS TO MAKE MONEY!. So, when the next M2 iPad Pro is announced I will be purchasing one. Also, I had to buy a new M1 Mac Studio this year because, yep, you guessed it, my iMac was deprecated by Apple. I get a new iPhone every year because I want the latest. I can keep my current one, it will run for a few years, I will get the “free” os updates until I can’t. I keep my Macs until they cannot run the “free” software upgrade.
So, are you willing to give Apple the finger just as much as you are Realmac on this thread? That is hypocritical then. You really don’t “own” your Apple hardware, if you want to continue using software that is only supported by the latest chip or other hardware feature, you will pony up the dollars to continue.

Realmac is a business and they want to continue to provide a software product that will have more frequent updates through out its life cycle.

Are you for real? But I concede that you haven’t stated that people should buy 3 apps.

But RM are developing 2 apps that do the same thing?

YourHead are also releasing their own app that also does the same thing.

3 apps that purportedly do the same thing.

And I concede again that you’re not telling people to buy all three apps.

And yet here we are with 3 apps on the table all doing the same thing and a whole lot of users scratching their head wondering what’s going on.

I’m glad you see no drama in this, but for those of us who have been using RW for many years and invested a lot into plugins, themes and stacks this is a whole load of drama and for developers who have been developing stacks there’s a whole lot of uncertainty, some have already mentioned that their sales are next to nothing.

I’m really sorry, but we obviously don’t see this in the same light.
