ALL Forms Down after 1.5.5 - possible php error?

With 1.5.5 my forms went down…

DreamHost - Hosting Company

Will load projects but out in the car :automobile: now…

TrumpetStudio.com (3 forms)
OneSongEveryDay.com (1 forms)

Don’t want to edit my other sites as they will break..

Just out of curiosity, did you publish to those sites, after you opened them with Elements, after you upgraded Elements to new version??

Yes after 1.5.5 published them…

Getting weird back slashes on TrumpetStudio.com
Also:

For the one you published to under 1.5.5, 1.5.7 is out, try re-publishing with that, to see if fixed??

Yes - I have a remote app into home computer

Even though I’m waiting for the wife I was able to update - publish - and check the site….

Home - here is a link to TrumpetStudio

Can’t do OneSong… too big of a file

Fixed the //// issue

Returned the pages to the old locations

Now onto fixing the forms!!!

Anyone have any ideas? Haven’t used Elements on old projects since this problem in 1.5.5…

Bueller? Bueller?

Hi @MichaelDroste

Any chance I could get some login details to your server so we can debug this issue further? You can send the details to forumsupport@realmacsoftware.com

Once we have those I’ll take a closer look!

Sure no problem…

Thank you

Will send link with filled in fields…

Thanx
Mike

Hey @MichaelDroste,

I got your project via email, but we need your FTP details, can you send those over?

However, these perhaps something more important that you need to change…

I’ve looked at your project and noticed how your site is structured, and this is very IMPORTANT as you’re not doing it the recommended way…

You’re putting individual pages directly in the root with filenames like Free.html . It works, but it’s not doing you any favours. Search engines and users both respond much better to clean, meaningful URLs that live in named folders.

For example, instead of:

https://trumpetstudio.com/Free.html

You’d be far better off with something like:

https://trumpetstudio.com/free/

This gives you, cleaner, more memorable links, a clearer site hierarchy, better long-term SEO
I think everything will just work better if you set things up correctly.

Here’s how to make these changes in Elements, I’ve recorded a video to explain it in more detail (sorry it’s so long, but I think this is REALLY important).

Let me know how you get on.

Don’t know what to do…

Change or Not?

I was one of the earliest Trumpet Websites on the internet. Almost 30 years.

People have hard linked to my site for references and information for those 30 years.

I was told ‘this is gold’ and I need to keep the original structure from 30 years ago.

I would loose tons - lots of seo juice and ranking - For example I changed the Free.html page for about 3-4 days and almost had my site delisted  LOL

Really don’t know what to do - need guidance and really good reasons - I’m about to watch your movie…

Ah okay, in that case be VERY careful about changing things. Perhaps don’t!

Why don’t you create a new page for your form that lives in a folder, you can then just link to it from your original pages where you need contact details.

Put the 5 php Pages in the new fashion: let elements choose path - then index.php

  • Store
  • Products
  • Submit Concert New
  • Contact
  • Newsletter Sign Up

emptied cache and tried forms in new location - did not work

BONUS THOUGH - doing the new way FIXED the multiple ////

Thanx As Always
Mike

You can always set up 301 redirects from your old pages to the new ones, that way you wouldn’t lose your SEO juice.

But if your site is 30 years old, you might have hundreds of redirects to add, so the value of having prettier URLs vs adding potential tons of redirects is up to you.

Been researching 301 - never did one before… lol :joy:

Duplicate page - change path and change to index.html

Then the following:

Seems pretty straightforward…

But worth the time?

Now that I have the php properly done in the new paths with index.php

Is it worth it?

What new features would it give me?

Thanx….

It would alleviate the OCD of many.

Also, please always check what ChatGPT is giving you. Unless something is new, those instructions look sus.

Yep - tried it - those windows and fields don’t exist - chat GPT was very wrong…
