All photos gone

Would have to do a Zoom troubleshooting call then, but tomorrow..

I just now replied to your email.

Update: For everyone following at home.

If I right click on the month old backed up site file, show package contents,

there is a Pages folder. In that folder is a folder for each photo album page.

In each page folder there is a Data folder with lots of files in it.

When I take the same steps on the current, malfunctioning site file, the Data folders are empty except for a .plist file.

How does this happen?

Most of the times:

Cleanmymac or other software running which disrupts the packages if rw is open (and sometimes when it is closed)

Project files are not stored locally but on Dropbox or one drive which again disrupts the contents of these package files

Thanks for looking.

I don’t have Cleanmymac and I can’t think of anything like it that would be running.

The second suggestion does not apply.

Additionally I have been using this RW site for years on the same computer.

BTW this problem did not happen on my two other RW sites.

Do you use foundry?

One other thing is when you do not include the resources in the project file but just link to them (advanced setting). In this case if the permissions for a folder changes due to an macOS upgrade or if the folder with the fotos changes the path the rw is not able to find them.

I do not use Foundry.

After I optimize the photos, I drag them into the Photo Album pages.

The photos are then archived in the Photos app. As far as I know there is no connection to the Photos app.

Only the images in the Photo Album pages have disappeared.

All images in various Stacks are still there.

I have checked permissions and they are read and write.

Then I am out of my knowledge, sorry :frowning:

Ok thanks.

This has nothing to do with the server changing, it’s more to do with the local project file.

Perhaps your local images have moved, anyway. I’d recommend removing the old photos from that page and re-adding them.

I would also ensure the “Copy into the document” option is turned on before doing this.

Hope that helps.

Yes I know that now. I was hoping there was some fix as there are 40 photo album pages to reconstitute with images and captions. And knowing the answer to the mystery would be interesting.

Only photo album pages were affected.

Two other sites on the same computer have no issues.

I still think it’s a permissions issue between your RapidWeaver app and your Photos app. If you updated your macOS version recently, perhaps something changed there as well, like the permissions got lost, or even worse, maybe Apple changed something in the Photos app which caused all your old linked resources to get zapped due to a changed file path…

Either way, I fear manually fixing this and making sure you have that “Copy Into the Document” option selected so this doesn’t happen again is the long-term fix.

We can try to do another Zoom call to troubleshoot if you got a working microphone but I don’t have high confidence it will be successful. :grimacing:

I bought a mic so a quick screen share would be good in about an hour or so if you are available then. Thanks

I won’t be available in another hour but we can try for tomorrow if you have some free time.

(or late tonight my time, probably like 23:00)..

Let me know by email at your convenience.

So I ended up manually replacing all the photos and captions on 55 photo album pages.

The cause of the problem was never determined so therefore, technically, the issue was not solved.

Sorry you had to do that manually @TomM, however I had low confidence it could have been repaired based on that old “Leave in place” setting being enabled and not having full access to your Mac to properly troubleshoot your permissions/settings/configuration, other running processes/apps, custom setups, recent changes in the system, etc.

Now that you’ve changed that setting to “Copy into the document”, that should provide better protection because now all those images live in your project file and are referenced directly from there. They shouldn’t get de-linked or “lost” again.

Please make sure you make regular backups of your project file if you don’t have Time Machine enabled, just in case you ever need to roll back to a previous project file version.

I have back up frequency set to Every Time I Publish.
