I truly am a beginner and due to wife’s health issues this past year I have started the learning curve with Elements again. First, thanks to Dan and Ben for all of the videos. Many videos show the use of a container and a flex and then other component(s) are added.
I’m confused as to which component do I a) set the size b) set background color c) set margins to separate from components that appear before and after the one I’m working on d) and when do I put containers / flex’s etc inside a grid item.
At least in the 3 sites I’m working on right now I’d like for each “section”, perhaps that means the Container to alternate the background color. But I don’t want the color to overwhelm the components in that “section” of the page. I spent hours today trying to get the background on a sticky menu component to be the same as that of a container; but although I was choosing the same color the results were definitely different.
Also it seems that images should all be the same width and height. If so how do I accomplish that.
I promise I’m trying to find answers in the videos and documentation as well as the forum.
unterstandig how container, flex and grid are working is from my point of view the essential knowledge for creating websites with Elements. Guess you are hanging exactly there
You started the right way with watching the videos, they are great by the way. I would also have a look at some of the templates which can be loaded for free when you start a new project. The North Eleven is a very good example.
If that doesn’t help, maybe you want to post one of your projects here (via Elements cloud) and we can have a look and solve your questions step by step.
So I thought it would be easiest to record a video and try and explain how to do the things you want. It’s a bit long, but it should get you up and running.
If you have any more specific questions, feel free to post and I’ll do my best to help you out!

Dan and Ben’s videos are truly a must as a help for my learning curve.
I am amazed how quickly Dan responds to questions; as he has done again for my post. I’m submitting a response now as I think I can be clearer by doing what Dan suggested; namely submitting a single question rather than many at a time.
I am so excited that you and your team have created Elements for us, totally agree with you that it is amazing.
Your video did answer much of what was confusing me. In several videos that you have done you use a Container and then add a Flex. In the Flex you will put other components; like text, image, gird etc
Because the Container and Flex have many of the same properties (and I guess most of the components do as well) I’m not clear if I want to set the background in the Container or should I use the Flex instead?
Secondly, if I want what’s displayed on the page to be smaller than full width and/or height do I set that with the Flex?

There’s no right or wrong answer here, set the background colour on whatever component works for you.
Elements is so flexible, there’s always many ways to do the same thing. But, yes if you have a flex in a container, you could set a width on the flex.
In the manual we have a common controls section where each of the common controls is described along with a video. We’ve got things like sizing and spacing. I’ll include a few links below so you can check those out.
