File name changes from html to php when clicking the menu

As best I remember, I removed all php elements a year ago. But I updated my site today after a month or so, and although the file name on the server and my hard drive is html, when you hit the menu for SOME of the pages, it changes to php, and of course returns a 404 error on some pages and an internal server error on others.

I have tried publishing several times.

Have you tried republishing all files? There might be old menu assets in there somewhere.

I had forgotten that once upon a time when I put some php in it, I had put redirects in the htaccess file. But I have no idea why the issue suddenly popped up after more than a year without it.
