Form behaviour no error message

just wondering under what conditions have to be entered for the ‘‘sorry there was an error’’ to be generated.
I put in an email as. sss@eee.123
and it still comes through ..anything with @ in gets delivered
and if you dont put any @ in it gets asks for a valid email..
never had the error message appear

Have you made sure the field type is set to “Email”?

Yes, just wondering what would generate the error message because what ever I do the email always gets sent. and if a field is wrong I just get the red box round the field

nothing I enter incorrectly will generate that red error message fro my published site
so the question is whats it for
