I can create a page in Stacks using the Aspen theme and things are fine. If I do the same thing on the home page (or if i switch a correct looking page to the home page) the words look different. I have turned off all html and other formatting with no luck.

Sounds like the text still has some formatting applied, very strange.
Could you try re-creating the page?
I recreated it 2 times before. Rebuilt it with plain text and then it looks fine. When I switch it to the home page (by deleting the current home page first) it changes.
Can you send over the file to dan@realmacsoftware.com so we can take a look?
Okay, mystery solved!
It was an incorrectly closed italic tag in the override default page title 
Here’s the correct code for you:
<i>Fredericksburg</br>Ballet Centre</i>
Only a nitwit would do something like that!
