How long before Classic reaches end of life?

Having decided to retire at the end of the year I’m slowly divesting myself of RW clients. It’s been great fun but I need to concentrate on my career as a rock star .

I still have a chunk of sites that need the occasional tweak - sometimes more - so have decided to stay with Classic. I realise these things are a bit elastic but does the team think Classic will still be alive and kicking (and working) when 2026 ticks over into 2027?

I think you’re good to go mind you I’m not a programmer mind you I’m a musician mind you I’m repeating what Dan and Ben have said that they will continue to support classic

Sure, but eventually they’ll stop supporting it - it doesn’t make sense to keep it going forever. So my question is quite specific - am I good for another 12 months?

Absolutely yes… no problem - piece of cake 12 months is a few updates to classic…

I’m more worried about Stacks 5, my stacks and themes in classic. Will they work with mac iOS in the future?

Check with stacks dev…

Forgot his name… sorry

The Stack 5 developer is not interested. He has a new project. I have no problem at the moment and I will move my sites to Elements.

All Stacks work in Classic and they will work with YourHead’s new Stacks app as well, whenever that is released. He’s been working on it for a long time. That is a massive understatement.

Unfortunately that’s not true. Not all Stacks will work in the new Stacks app. There’s quite a lot that need updating to work in the new system, and since a lot of developers have left the platform I can’t see older stacks ever getting an update…

As long as Classic + Stacks works on this years new macOS release, you should be fine

Things are really starting to ramp up for Elements :tada: We’re seeing more and more users migrate from Classic and it shows no signs of slowing down!

Sorry, I could have been more clear. All Stacks that currently work in Classic will continue to work in Classic unless RealMac changes something, correct? And all Stacks that currently work with Classic are supposed to work in the new Stacks app as well. And I believe Workman said all of his Stacks will work, At least that’s the last I heard from their Discord unless something has changed?

Stacks 5 didn’t work with Tahoe until the developer made an update. I have read his focus is not on Stacks 5 in the future. @Steve

“As long as Classic + Stacks works on this years new macOS release, you should be fine”

As always, it’s the ‘should’ that puts the wind up me.

We know many of you have built your workflow around RapidWeaver Classic, and we want to reassure you that we’re continuing to maintain and update it with important fixes, and optimisations to keep things running smoothly.

@dan In terms of years, also for the next OS?

Thanks

I have alway imagined that at some point there will be no more development of RW. Makes perfect sense. If I knew that the latest OS meant I could not use the version of RW that I was using, and I needed RW for paying customers, I just wouldn’t upgrade the OS.

Am sure RMS won’t/can’t put a timeframe on it but even if they declared today that there would be no more RW upgrades it will still work until you upgrade your OS beyond RW’s capabilities.

I’m currently keeping RW Classic on an old MacBook Pro with an old OS. They work together fine. I don’t use that machine for anything else. As I give up clients through the year I want to make sure they’re not abandoned, and that I can update their sites until they decide what to do next.

The technology I used to build many of these sites is finished. I understand that. I just want to give clients good options as I exit the building, rather just waving goodbye and riding into the sunset.

And RW has given good service. Here’s the first site I built, still working - more or less - https://www.helenwatson.net/

Even more entertainingly, here’s a site built with Blueball’s Freestack (before it become responsive) - http://www.brightonhealthy.co.uk/ - still there. Freestack was an amazing product, years ahead of its time.

RW and Stacks have been great. I just need them to be great for a little while longer.
