Icloud Drive Dropbox Onedrive

Hi,

Anyone using a cloud service to store the project file and templates?

I use Dropbox for RW Classic and there are occasions where I doubt if it is a good solution.

I´m rebuilding my sites I Elements and want to start fresh with “the best” solution. To store on the mac gets me nervous. I work sometimes on my stationary and sometimes on my Macbook.

How do you work?

Hi @engrafiker,

Regarding using Dropbox for RW Classic: never EVER use Dropbox, or any other cloud storage solution other than iCloud, for storing RW Classic project files.

RW Classic stores projects not as files, but as bundles. Dropbox doesn’t understand what a bundle is, and treats the RW project as a folder (directory). This can quite easily corrupt the index file of the bundle (Contents.plist), after which the project file is unusable.

iCloud, being made by Apple, does understand what a bundle is and will leave it alone, and is therefore safe to use.

If you search these forums ojn “Content.plist”, you’ll see what I mean - quite a few people have lost days, months or even years of work because of Dropbox corrupting their project.

As for Elements - that too stores projects as bundles, but I’ve not yet seen people having similar problems with that. To be on the safe side, I’d for now recommend against using Dropbox for storing Elements projects too.

Cheers,
Erwin

It was until recently I had the Contents.plist problem on my Classic sites. Therefore my doubts. It worked fine for years.

I´m almost certain I will move over to Icloud for my Elements sites.

I have a large project I started on and stored localy on my mac. Is it safe to just move it to Icloud? Any procedur I would need to follow? If I set the mac to sync the documents folder to Icloud. Would it work? I would prefer to ad a folder on at the root of Icloud. Not in the Documents folder.

Hi @engrafiker,

That will work fine. iCloud will work without issue.

Cheers,
Erwin

Elements comes with 1GB of Cloud storage of its own.

It does, but with respect to @dan Cloud != Cloud.

My entire workflow resides in iCloud, and not only is it an extra layer of backup, it also ensures portability and security (as Apple iCloud is ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certified, and has public SOC 2 and SOC 3 audit reports available).

When working with certain clients (especially government, or customers in health, finance or security), they pretty much demand this.

Dropbox is also certified for all these, but doesn’t play nice with RW Classic as stated above.

Don’t get me wrong - for everyday home and small business use, the Elements Cloud is perfectly fine and you should in no way stop using it if you don’t build for the target audience I described above.

Cheers,
Erwin
