Introduce yourself!

Hello … My name is John … I started back in the web’s early days … How many here are old enough to Remember? … America On-line was all the rage. Back in the early days of web browsers where Mosaic was one of the first web browsers… and finally … Netscape came along.

You had to learn HTML back then. Fortunately, html code back then was only a half page long. I used many of the primitive early webdesign programs (remember, we were using dial up modems back then with slow connections … so putting an image on your page could take viewers up to 20 minutes to load).

I used Wordpress for a while, but Wordpress websites load slower and when WP plug ins get finicky, I’d find that if you didn’t keep up with the maintenace, sites would crash.

I had a ton of domains and websites that I let dwindle as after 37 years as a hypnotherapist in NYC, I retired. With what’s going on in the world, old clients calling me, their families stressed out beyond belief. They’re asking me to step out of retirement … and maybe with inflation, that may be a necessary evil.

I used Dreamweaver when it came about … now … In it’s infancy, when you only needed to know HTML, Dreamweaver was great. Then it became more convoluted … with the additions of PHP, CSS and an everchanging yearly list of changing standards. I used Microsoft Frontpage a bit. And I recently found and am learning (slowly) Rapidweaver (so I appreciate everyone’s recommendations and help).

I want to update some of my really old 15 year old (untouched sites) from way back - healthwthhypnosis dot com , johnpetrocelli dot com , and a few fun sites that I did I did for friend’s businesses (and evidentally, they’re still working).

Rapidweaver seems to make it easy … Especially with responsive sites. A few years ago, you had to design a different site for all the different screens, tablets, phones, plus include the code to recognize what the viewer was using … So, I’m excited … I don’t want to learn any more coding …

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Hey there,

Kim here, former user coming back after a long break. We used Rapidweaver at work for many years before rolling over to Wordpress (we’re newspaper publishers). I retired earlier in the year and decided to make a new personal web site and after 10 years of Wordpress the thought of running it at home brought me back to RW.

Based in Sydney, Australia, G’day from down under.

My name is Greg and I live in Encinitas, CA and I am a surfboard shaper, so I need to modernize my site. I have been trying out every web builder, in order to find the most logical one for me. I am currently with Everweb, but do not find the transition to responsive very easy at all. So, I finally joined RW yesterday, but can’t even attempt to start a project. I want to create a new, responsive site, while keeping my site live with Everweb, but every time I attempt to start working on my new site, RW sends me over to the tutorial section. I have watched the videos for a couple of weeks now and want to get started. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I already purchased Stacks and I want to buy Foundry, but I want to make sure I can actually use RW first. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. I have emailed RW, but have not heard from anybody.

Before you can start building your site you need to add a page first. Go up to the ‘+’ button and choose a page type - probably Stacks in your case. Se the attached image. If this helps, come back with any other queries and we’ll see if we can help you get going.

Hi Greg…can we see your current site…just for an idea.

Rob,

Thanks for the quick response! Last night, I figured out to click on the + mark. Brilliant of me, but I named my first page Home. I will change it to Stacks. I bought Stacks and realized that it doesn’t contain very many stacks, such as navigation. I don’t see it anywhere. Here is all I can see.

Thanks again for your help!

Yes, Stacks (capital ‘S’) is a plugin that supports 100s, (1,000s?) of third party ‘stacks’ (small ‘s’) so it only contains a few basic stacks for columns, images, text etc. Usually it’s the theme you’ve chosen which will dictate the menu styling, but there are one or two menu stacks which can override the theme.

For example, Clean Menu - Clean Menu - RapidWeaver Stack
and

Mega Menu - Mega Menu - RapidWeaver Stack
and

Side Menu (I’ve used this) - Home | Side Menu
and
SuperMenu | Stacks4Stacks

There are probably others as well.

Sure, here it is…www.sauritchsurfboards.com

I was trying to design my own from scratch, as opposed to using a template. Here are a couple of the bigger brands of surfboard builders, that have responsive websites. These are just a few of hundreds of surfboard manufacturers.

Hi, I’m Amy; I live in west Michigan. I successfully used an older version of RapidWeaver a few years ago but then got away from website creation and am now having a very hard time getting back into it. In fact, I’m not even sure I can put into words all the challenges I’m facing.

Question: is it worth it for me to keep pushing this stone uphill, or should I jump ship and try to create an online storefront with BigCartel or Wix or some other program?

I spin yarn by hand from wool, and am hoping to sell it on my site. I also do genealogical research. It would be good to have a site that reflects my interests.

Thanks for reading, if you have comments or questions, let me know.

Hi.
I’m Barry. I’m not new to Rapidweaver but I am new to the forum. I live on Cape Cod, MA in the U.S. I’ve signed onto the Forum because I’m starting the process of re-doing my current old RW site and will need some help. My first question will be Foundry versus Foundation…but I will ask that question in a new topic or find an existing one. I look forward to working with all of you. Thx.

Hi all, this is JK and a newbie here.

Hi Berry &jk…ask anything.

I’m Luis and returning to RW after a long hiatus. I’m a fiction author and will be making my author website. Past life as a professional double bassist, trained for opera singing, did graphic arts in high school back when 4-color separation was done by hand, and have done some HTML coding back around the turn of the century.

I’m a French psychologist. I just start to learn Rapidweaver in order to build my own professionnal site and my non-professionnal site about, guess what, psychology. Retirement approach slowly but inevitably, so I’m getting ready.

Well, I still had my credentials for this forum so I’m back.

Looks like I never introduced myself. I was using RW for my company website as well as a couple non-profits. I sold my business and now am just caring for one non-profit that uses very little of RW powers. But it sure makes my “job” easy.

Hi Dan, Hi Everyone,

I used to be here right at the beginning , with the very first version of RapidWeaver. It was so many years ago, that I can’t even remember. It makes me happy to recognise some nicknames though; apparently I am not the only oldtimer here
I made my website while spending way too much time at the hospital, after a serious climbing incident, back in 2004. I haven’t touch it in years, last update is from 2017. And it is what it is - a crappy attempt of sharing some of my adventures, mostly via photos. It got so old that I am genuinely astonished it still works. So now - I am back, hoping to learn enough to be able to share the good stuff and maybe motivate some folks to go out and spend some time outdoors - in a pleasant way.
Kind regards to all RapidWeavarians!
