Is there a way to show the filenames of the pics in the gallery or masonry? or do I have to batch edit the metadata of the files in order to get this done?

I assume you are asking about the Gallery component included in Elements , and the free Masonry Images component?
If so, neither of those component support displaying filenames, authors, captions, or meta data.
However, Gallery Pro does support displaying the file author, caption, and meta data.
