Project file saved to Dropbox "Can't be Opened" Error

RapidWeaver Elements 1.4.0 (23889)

So, I’ve got two Macs that I’m working from - one is a 2025 MacBook Air, the other is a 2017 Intel iMac. I’ve been mostly working from the MacBook, because it’s portable, and wherever I am. I’d like however, to be able to open and edit project files from the iMac as well.

Elements installed on both machines, each works fine independently. Saved a project file to Dropbox from the MacBook, (and I can open it again from the same MacBook just fine), When however, I try to open that file from my iMac, it sees it, but reports that the file “can’t be opened.”

I double-checked file permissions, and it says that I can read/write, but no one else. Logged into the same Apple ID account, and the same Dropbox on both machines.

Ideas? Suggestions? Obvious goof’s that I just don’t see?

Thanks in advance!

PS - I haven’t yet tried to go the other way - ie save a project file from the iMac to Dropbox, and open it on the MacBook. Will do that…

The Elements saved file is saved in Package format. Dropbox does not handle those well, if at all. It will eventually fail on most all cloud services. Use iCloud if you want to be able to work on it from more than 1 Mac. iCloud handles the package format fine.

Hmmm… I’ve been able to go back and forth from the MacBook to Dropbox just fine - so far…

Just tried my experiment - created a project file on the iMac, saved it to Dropbox, and was able to easily open it from the MacBook.

I usually AM working with iCloud, but wasn’t in this case.

With what you say, I’ll ensure that I save in more local places, just wanted to have another option.

Thanks for your comments!

It WILL eventually fail…Bunch of reports here in the forums and I believe that the user manual was also updated to avoid use of cloud services for saving except for iCloud.

Dropbox will eventually get the contents of the project out of sync, for this reason we recommend using iCloud. You might also want to periodically back-up your Project to Elements Cloud

We have more details and advice on syncing projects in the docs:
