RWC sitemap.xml - Canonical

The .xml file made by RWC makes links such as: https://domain.com/index.html
But I want Tidy Website Links: https://domain.com/

I also use this in the Inspector HTML Code window Head: <link rel=“canonical” href="https://domain.com/”/>

How can I remove: /index.html in the RWC sitemap.xml?
I can manually do this with BBEdit or make a sitemap.txt file instead. But every time I upload files the sitemap.xml will be replaced.

I asked this in April 2024 but got no reply.

Hey @PLM

According to Google they want the Sitemap to be the full absolute URL.

It shouldn’t be a problem if the Sitemap uses the full absolute URL and you enable Tidy Website Links so /index.html or /index.php don’t show up in the browser’s address bar when visiting the page.

Are you having problems with something in Google Search Console that you are trying to resolve?

Google SEO wants <link rel=“canonical” href="https://domain.com/”/>
with or without tidy links, not both. I put this plus name/ on every page and then no problem on news sites (copy the full url from General Setting under Encoding). Canonical seems to override .xml.
