Earlier this week I asked about Intranet and ELEMENTS so I sat down with a coffee and did a process map of my 20 year old business. This is. a micro, home based business with me and the wife and no one else. We are UK and Euro distributors for a very niche disabled aid and have 4 websites.
After finishing my coffee I had a rough outline of what I needed and I slept on it overnight.
On Tuesday I did the frame work in Elements and after 4 hours I had a fully working intranet. I had links to my XERO accounts package where most of the work is done, I had links to all my excel files, PDF files and then BAM! I sat wife down and then asked her to use it everything what she wanted and needed was there and then she asked the question I was waiting for.
"How does anyone know how to run our business from this? I was anticipating this as I had already put in the post the other day about a knowledge base and pointed to the bottom of the page where there was a blank space with heading “knowledge base”.
So I started on Wednesday with the obvious starting point. - Customers - information and settings for XERO - easy one thinks! Sadly not!
So this is where “things we take for granted” came in, I was waiting for CMS2 to be launched as I thought this would be a great place to add “blog” post to contain my knowledge base. I watch avidly at @ben video and then the same feeling hit me. Being passionate about what you do is amazing and then explaining to an “idiot” ( not in a derogatory way) is a skill that I am lacking.
Something I do everyday in seconds without fail and then writing down in a knowledge base so the non user can understand is mind blowingly
not easy. It took 5 pages of a PDF to explain the simplest thing of adding a customer. Why? the reason is because there are so many variables e.g. I have direct customers, I have distributors, I have distributors that want good sent direct to customer and then invoices to them, I have distributors that want goods sent to a central warehouse but invoices to to separate companies etc. etc. Sadly in my head it’s a doddle but try writing it down!
So now back to the RM Team @dan et al - their passion is endless, what they are achieving is awesome - maybe “it just works”
- this community ( it used to be forum) is just as awesome too but today as the “idiot” in the room @ben where do I publish my online CMS editor to if I have 4 websites in use on ELEMENTS HOSTING ( another thing not to take for granted).
Have a great day everyone and be thankful for what we have in life!
