UI Improvement request

RapidWeaver Elements 2.3.0 (24272)

SETUP: When looking at the info panel of a selected menu on your page, in particular when viewing in phone view… you can click the PREVIEW button to see what the dropdown menu looks like. Cool feature. Except…

PROBLEM: The problem has a few issues…

  1. the popup menu can cover most (maybe even all) of the menu behind it. This is a big problem when in conjunction with the issues below.

  2. Clicking the preview button brings up the popup menu, but that popup is just visual, it does nothing except show you what your choices look like, again, the dead window is not really a problem… except…

  3. That popup also locks you out of that page. So suddenly, you cant do anything at all, and it is confusing… then you might realize that the preview button is holding you hostage, or

  4. THE CLINCHER (lol)… if you click anywhere in the app or page while troubleshooting, our side info panel disappears and you have no obvious way to unfreeze the page… The ONLY way to get the menu with the Preview button to reappear, is to click the completely hidden menu that is behind the popup.

I thought the app had crashed and after an hour of trying to unfreeze and undo… I trashed the website and started over, thinking the file corrupted.

The app acts familiar to anyone who uses a computer… it acts like the app froze…

SOLUTIONS:

  1. Put the Preview button in the toolbar. Enable it with highlighting whenever it is usable (depending on which menu is selected). When the preview is turned on, make the button pulse or something…

  2. HELP Popup Menus… A single popup menu that warns one time… as soon as the button is pressed, give me a warning that the app might seem frozen until I turn off the preview button.

  3. The MOST logical… when in Preview and the popup menu overtakes the top of my screen… the “X” button is available, this is the button you might press in the real world to close the popup… Why not allow that X to close the popup in the interface? (and at the same time, turning off Preview).

this image is after clicking the PREVIEW button in the right side info panel…

And this image is what the interface looks like after clicking anywhere in the window. Without knowing that the preview is holding the interface hostage, it is really hard for new users to figure out what is happening. nothing in the window works… sure seems like that X should close the window and end the preview eh? Hmmmm???

I ended up thinking my site had corrupted and I trashed the site and started over. It wasn’t until I thought the file had corrupted again, and I accidentally found the answer to the problem… otherwise I would have trashed the app and asked for a refund.

and FINALLY, just for your reference, the image below shows (highlighted in green) the thin band around the top of the popup… REMEMBER, that thin band is invisible, you just have to know to click there to get the menu back with the Preview…

This can easily be fixed.

If you had the node browser visible, you would find it a lot easier to navigate to elements on the page, whether they are underneath other elements or not. You would then not have to guess where that element you mention is located, as it would be visible in the node browser hierarchy, along with all of the other items on the page.

@mabou2, agreed it can be confusing and it’s something we’ll look at improving. However as @handshaper has already suggested, the node browser is the way to go for this :+1:

Dan! thanks so much for replying.

I (now) know about the nodes panel and I use it constantly. It is a great solution for navigating the invisibles on the page.

But it is still an inelegant workaround to the UI issue. There simply should never be a situation where the user is blocked from interacting with what is on screen, by a check box that is now invisible to that user, and no indication at all as to why the user cant keep working on the project page.

Yep, experienced users will know about the node panel. But a UI update is needed… even something as simple as making the X (in the popup) shut off the popup and get us out of Preview mode…
