@dan What are the plans for better integration of WebP into Elements?
I use them in all of my sites, and they work relatively well in Elements, but something like the masonry grid does not work with WebP images, which is a shame.
While we are at it, could we please get the layout editor to support transparent PNG files? It currently adds a white background, making it difficult to see what one’s page would look like when live.
Totally agree, we really need to get this sorted 
I’ve added a ticket to implement both of these requests. I can’t say how soon it’ll be done, but it’s high on the list now!

There has been no word on this subject in any of the releases since a year ago.
I was sent a bunch of images and movies to add to an old website yesterday - the format is .avif / .avis
How do these fit in and are they also going to be supported ? I read …
vs. JPG:
AVIF files are typically 50% to 60% smalle than traditional JPG images.
vs. WebP:
AVIF files are generally 20% to 30% smaller than WebP files at equivalent quality levels.
The editor now has better handling for WebP, previously it used to flatten them and remove the transparency. This is all fixed now.
I have been using WebP a lot more recently and it works great in the image component!
Is there something that’s not working for you?
The transparency was the thing I was most interested in seeing fixed in the editor. I had not tested it lately, so I did not see this fix. Will test it out today.
