Apple’s new OS Big Sur

I am working on a MacBook 2015…updated and working great…with RW 8.xx
I like a lot of the features of Big Sir…
Not a hitch…

I am on 11.1 Beta now… this seems to be more stable. However GoogleDrive FileStream does not work anymore…

Meanwhile, my conclusion: updating to Big Sur was my worst mistake since working with macs (30 years…). It’s a nightmare of finder crashes and crashes and crashes, unexpected. Almost impossible to work.

I am on MacBook Pro 2016 connected to Thunderbolt Display, screensaver disabled as this is one thing causing crashes… I guess, Safari is also causing crashes.

RW is 8.7, crashes too from time to time.

What does Apple want? Forcing to buy a new machine? Frustrating…disappointing.

Well, I’ve been running Big Sur for about a month and the only problem I’ve had is the known one with SuperDuper. That has prompted me to use Time Machine for the first time in years and I was pleasantly surprised that it had zero impact on performance, unlike SuperDuper. Everything runs faster than ever, despite the fact that APFS favours SSDs and I only have a Fusion Drive.

I did a straightforward “upgrade” to Big Sur and noticed that things seemed a little slower on my well specified MBP, even after turning all the bells and whistles off. So I did something I’ve wanted to do for a while and blitzed the machine. Reformatted the SSD and did a clean install from scratch.

So far, its been much better. Haven’t decided whether to bother re-installing RW yet, might wait and see what innovation awaits us with RW9 first.

Anyway, the clean install is highly recommended as, so far, its been fast and smooth with zero issues.

i’ve had no such issues (and have been running big sur since the first public beta), and am using rapidweaver regularly (on a 2016 12" macbook).

i’d suggest NOT doing a clean install unless it seems necessary… and running the combo updater, for example, might help, before that bigger step of a clean install.

but glad it worked for you!

Why? The way I’m setup a clean install is nothing. I clean install my w10 laptops every year or so at least.

I use, zap, then recreate VMs all the time. There’s nothing special about one OS instance over another. My storage, dependencies and most settings are separated from my compute, so why not take advantage of a nice clean install?

Feels like a new machine and in doing it I prove my ability to recover from catastrophe quickly, which helps me sleep:-) so why not?

am not arguing. you can do whatever works best for you.

for most people, a clean install is overkill. i’ve done it a few times in my mac life, but no longer; updating works fine, and am quickly (or sort-of quickly) back to work. not sure how a clean install lets you ‘recover from catastrophe quickly’, or why you’d face a catastrophe.

but we all do as we see fit, am fully supportive of that.

A clean install simulates what not having any data on the machine would be like, thus forcing one to have robust recovery and contingency procedures/plans.

By catastrophe I mean if my machine were lost, stolen or otherwise suffered some sort of catastrophic failure.

it’s an interesting theory, but it’s just that… a theory. what happens if, after doing a clean install, something gets damaged, or a file gets corrupted, or you download malware? you still have to resolve that issue.

personally, am not convinced it’s worth it, and my own experience confirms that. but again, do what works best for you, that’s what matters most.

Thank you very much for pointing out that it’s ok by you for me to do what works best for me (proving that I can resume my workflow quickly in the event of the machine going kaput).

You also have my approval for you to continue to do whatever you think is best.

am happy to help!

Hi Dan just need one thing clarified please.

I got RapidWaver a week ago as I new from app store it would work on my new iMac and old one as well as my MacAir which i love and take every where.

I know need the apps like Stacks have seen a nice bundle with a few extra ones. ? is dose it work same way as RapidWeaver in that i can use on iMac and MacAir.
? Foundry or foundation as that are both expensive which would be best to get first

Many Thanks Dave
