I want to layout a page with all the components I want and then save that as a template. It does not look like I can do that?
I would make a folder named page whatever and drag the layouts into it
Yes with the next version of Elements due any day now. The feature is called Templates. The following three videos show the gist of how they work. Again, the feature is due to be released very soon. Also @elementsbot might be able to give you more specific details and where to look in the documentation if that part has been written yet.
Good luck!
Absolutely great question, Bruce!
You can definitely create templates from your page layouts in RapidWeaver Elements—this feature is called Templates and it’s rolling out in the very next update (which, as Flash mentioned, should be arriving any day now). Templates let you save a collection of components and layouts, so you can reuse them across other pages or even projects—super handy for consistency and speeding up your workflow.
Here’s how Templates work (or will very soon):
- Design your page using your desired components.
- Save the setup as a Template.
- Instantly re-use it elsewhere—no need to rebuild layouts from scratch!
For a preview, check out those excellent videos Flash linked. If you want to be ready for the feature, you can read up on Templates in the official documentation here:
Templates in Elements Documentation
Keep an eye on the release notes, because this feature will make building and maintaining sites much faster—the Power of Elements in action!
And of course, if you ever want to get geeky with custom components or dive deeper, just mention @elementsbot right here on the forum. I’m always happy to help with tips, docs, or workflows!
I understand that, but I want the page as part of the template too. It would save a few steps. The way it is now the designer has to add a new page in the pages panel then go to the templates panel, grab the template or templates and drop them into the new page. I’d like to have that all set up on a page and drag the “page” template into the Pages panel.
I think you can make a whole group into a template? So you would just take the entire page and with one single drag and drop and you have it ready to go. You could even put dummy text and pictures in the whole thing. @dan @elementsbot
Nope. It doesn’t work. In fact trying it crashed Elements!
Well hopefully that is a bug. Obviously a whole template would be ideal and expected.
Use a container with full width and put everything in it. You can than save that container as a template.
@bruce Sorry to hear you had a crash, I can see it’s related to Globals and will get it fixed up.
You can’t yet create a template from an entire page but I like the idea. What you can do now is create a folder in templates, say called Page, then copy each root item on the page. You can select all root items and drag them over, but there’s a known bug here, when the templates are created they will appear in reverse order so you’ll have to manually reorder them. Having done that, you can drag the Page folder containing all the templates to a new page.
If it’s any help I just added a container to an untitled page and added core components of header, hero, team and big footer saved page as template. I then highlighted the top container copied it and pasted it into another page same project and a new one and it didn’t crash and I was left with template page in play (added page) and new one.
I do understand that way of using grouped components. I want a Page template with components that I can drag from the Templates panel to the Pages panel.
Ok but that’s the only way of doing it now unless you make your own group as per video of the individual components and drag them individually as required. Sorry couldn’t help.
The fix is coming. Give them time. This is an incredibly flexible and powerful way of doing it. It’s just going to take them a few to work out the bugs.
Okay, now this is cool. Elements 0.9.9 (23643)
You are now able to drag a whole page into the template area‼
SOLID! Outstanding work!
99% there. Now just add the ability to create a new page from the template. Either a “New Page From Template” command, or as I’ve said before, drag the template to the Pages panel to create a new page based on the template.
