As mentioned in last week’s post, we’re happy to announce the new Elements Hosting Backups service is now live and available on all hosting plans! 
While backups may sound boring, they are anything but. El takes data protection seriously, and so do we!
So what’s new?
Previously, we were making full account backups and storing them for 7 days on our S3 storage server. While this was great for disaster recovery purposes, it didn’t allow you to restore individual files/folders. You had to restore your entire hosting account or nothing. Not much flexibility. 
Additionally, every backup was a full account backup, even if nothing changed on your website or hosting account. This meant a lot of unnecessary data being backed up for those who rarely make changes to their websites. 
Our new Elements Hosting Backups service changes all of that! The new Backups service will use around 10% of the space as the old S3 Backups service, as well as provide the following benefits:
- Incremental backup functionality - Only backs up the files/folders that have changed since the last backup.
- Ability to do file/folder level restorations - Restore a single file/folder or multiple files/folders as needed. No longer necessary to do full account restorations!
- Greater Backups Frequency - Previously we backed up once per day. Now, we are backing up four times per day (once every 6 hours)!
- Greater Backups Retention - Previously we maintained 7 days of backups on file customers could restore from. We have now increased that to 30 days!!
- Increased Speed - Create and restore backups faster than before.
- More reliable - Incremental backups and file/folder level restorations are more reliable than full account backups.
- Restore permanently deleted websites - Now customers can restore websites that have been permanently deleted from their hosting account! (subject to our above listed retention policies)
- EU Storage location (GDPR compliant) - Our Backups server is located in Nuremberg, Germany, meaning 100% EU data storage and residency!
How can I use the new Elements Hosting Backups service?
Easy! Backups are made automatically every 6 hours, and you can make manual on-demand backups as well, all from the Elements Hosting Reactor Panel. Restorations are handled here too.
We’ll be keeping the old S3 Backups service running concurrently with the new Elements Hosting Backups service until April 30th, 2026, after which we’ll be shutting down the old S3 Backups service completely. Customers won’t have to do anything on their end during this changeover.
