Hi everyone! I have two websites that I updated the other day. In the past, as the sites were initially built years ago, any time that I made a change and republished, everything was fine and dandy. Now after the minor changes, the site takes FOREVER to load… why?
I am using Rapidweaver 8, Aspen theme… no images or videos changed, just the PayPal button and some text. (I seem to recall in the past that I had to check a setting box somewhere, then publish, then uncheck in and republish - but it has been so long I cannot recall what that was or where to find it)
Is it a particular page that is loading slowly for you, or the whole website?
I tested your home page. On first load (no cache), it took ~3.8 seconds to load. The fallback banner image, your logo, and the .mp4 video banner were the resources contributing to the majority of that load time.
How long is the page you are testing taking to load? FOREVER is kind of subjective, if you could give an exact time like in my screenshots it would help troubleshoot. You can view the web inspector console in Safari by following the below:
Enable Developer Menu in Safari >> Settings >> Advanced Tab >> Check "Show features for web developers:
Then select the Network tab and then visit the website in your browser. You will see how long it takes for all the page resources to load with a total load time at the bottom.
@dang I will do that, thank you. It used to load very quickly until this last update to change the PayPal buttons and some text. The video headers used to load very quickly, the images in the galleries loaded very quickly. Not 3 seconds, less than 1. On all devices. So strange that now it takes so long. I have not changed the banners or images at all.
I recall there being something in the settings for this theme that I was told when I first built the site that I had to check to publish, then go back in to uncheck it and republish so that the videos and photos would load quickly.
@dang I cleared the cache on my desktop but it is not loading slowly there at this moment…but on ipads and iphones it is still loading very slowly. I don’t know how to do the load time on a mobile device but the logo itself takes over 5 seconds to load and the gallery images take about 10 seconds to load. The latest news page took almost a minute to load.
I am going to republish- maybe something was weird in the internet universe that day?
Open your logo in Apples preview app and make it smaller or use Pixelmator or photoshop to make it smaller. Right now its way to big. probably make the logo 100px by 100px
Log in at your hosting company. I am sure you will find out how to get https. If not give them a call. When you got the https certificate change the url-settings in Rapidweaver (General > Web Address and Publishing > Website Address) and republish all files. After that you should redirect http to https via htaccess or maybe via a setting at your host. It is more easy than it sounds. Just go step by step.
