I want to publish my Elements site on the same FTP as my Classic site (which is functional). I was hoping I could just create a folder on the server and place my Elements site in that, but it does not seem to work. I was able to publish my Elements site, but I can’t see it on the web. What is the right way to set this up?
I assume you created https://youraddress.###/test
then moved all the files to that folder, set this in Elements settings, then either manually copy or published through Elements
Then you should just go to that address in the browser
I thought that was what I did. Anyway, I have another idea. Now I want to publish my Elements site. I have to work on that. So far no luck getting it to work. I copied the settings from my Classic site, and I do have a connection, so I’m not sure why it does not connect. I get a 404 error. I will contact my host.
Are you going to keep both website versions online? If so:
-
I would make a separate folder for the OLD site (and just make a link to that version if you need to show it to someone).
-
For the new website, I would then publish to the original folder
This is the simplest way without getting technical. But your server settings decide which folder is publicly shown when you enter the web address for the server (for port 80). Setup is depending on if you have your own server at home/office, or if you have hosting somewhere else (like Hostinger etc.)
I hope this helps, and sorry if I didn’t got the question right.
No, I deleted the old site. For some unknown at this moment reason I get nothing. Here’s my web address:
Here’s my publishing setup:
Is the /kieffer folder the same path as used original in the RW Classic?
The path needs to be the folder your host has as the public / website folder. Often, they are named www, public_html or something like that. But different setups is possible, depending on the host and the options there.
However, if your settings here are the same, and your publishing works, it’s strange that you won’t get it to show.
By the way, I will check later, because I can’t remember, but I wonder if I had to remove the ftp. and only input the rest of the server name in the server field. But I guess that’s not the case here if you get connection and can publish the content.
I suppose the real issue is that the /kieffer folder is not the folder where the content should be (or it’s not linked as that folder).
I think you might have found the issue. I have a faint memory of asking my host to set up the /kieffer folder for some forgotten reason. I may have deleted that redirect from the ftp last night when I cleared everything from the classic site setup. I don’t think I need that folder anymore, so I will work on changing the path in my Elements publishing setup. Or I will have the host fix the redirect.
That sounds good. I hope that results in the website showing up.
The host did the redirect and the new Elements site is working, even though I am not done creating it! At least I can test it for real now. Thanks for the help here.
I just saw it online, that’s good.
Your site looks cool. Have you used the Menu component, or made the menu on top manual?
Thanks. I used Top Pages for that menu. I have a lot more to do. I may need help with web icons next. I’ll make a new post for that.
And, I remember why I had the host point my site to the /kieffer folder. I could not tell which files were mine and which were theirs on the root level. I was deleting some of their files so the redirect folder helped stop me from doing that.
Oh, that’s smart.
I’ll look out for new post.
