RapidWeaver 9 Wishlist, what do you want to see?

Will this also effect deleting of multiple pages? Also undo really works for the last step. If the deletion happened five steps ago you may also start un-doing many things that you don’t want to.

Then use Time Machine and Revert To and save frequently…

It has nothing to do with the processor and everything to do with the OS. iOS is very locked down, no way to get plugins or add-ons to work on an iPad, so it is more than likely to never happen.

I hope we can do copy and paste text formatting

I apologize ahead of time if some of my comments are “out in left field”, since I am still a newbie to the Rapidweaver community. Anyhow, what I would ideally like to see is a full-site block editor – here is a link showing a demonstration of this: https://cloudup.com/ikQhAxqCGXV. This is where Wordpress is heading with the Gutenberg editor and I think it can run better in the Mac development environment. Basically, every page of a website is composed of blocks (whether it is a header, footer, sidebar, content, etc…). With Rapidweaver as a tool to facilitate this, we can focus collaboratively to achieve this, and grow our tiny market share, and broaden our user base. An easy to use, full-site block editor would allow developers to create more customized sites and enable all kinds of different styles. If we can incorporate features within Rapidweaver and/or stacks such as page caching, image optimization, and other page loading optimizing capabilities, along with the tools to rapidly and easily deploy sites, then we can really do some damage.

I think one concrete step in the right direction is to improve the blog capability. Within Rapidweaver, it exists only as a page, but it would be nice to make it a stack and make it a blog container/stack. I appreciate the great stacks out there such as Poster 2, Total CMS, Pulse CMS, and Armadillo, but there are some disadvantages with them when compared to the full Wordpress blog environment. I think we should take advantage of the direction of using headless CMS (such as Contentful) and move in that direction (actually we are looking at developing a stack that will communicate with Contentful). That way, you have owners focus on blogging and developers simultaneously working on improving the website experience. The focus then is no longer the CMS, but how to display blog content within the style of the site.

Anyhow, I do have more detailed ideas on how to move in this direction, but again, maybe I am way “off-base”. At least maybe I can contribute my two cents on the wish list… Happy weaving to all.

Built-in robust CMS!!!

Something like the Elementor of WordPress.

Live updating of page while editing.

I agree here those above (that for whatever reason I didn’t manage to quote) that feel Stacks should be part of RW. I, too, feel like Stacks should just be an an integrated part of RW to begin with. There must be some sort of deal that can be reached between the devs to “make it so”…

For the .htaccess https question from @Anonymous The reason that’s coming up is because you’re not forcing all traffic to use https:// - so if a user tries http: they get that warning.
We have some tips on this here. For forcing SSL, we recommend option #3 here:

Thanks. I understand that. I use .htaccess rules for every site that I build. The tips are still a great resource though.

The substance of my request wasn’t that it’s hard for me to do, just that it’s difficult for novices, and many may not even know they need a rule in addition to having the certificate. When true, sites are accessible at HTTPS and HTTP URLs which defeats the purpose.

In Squarespace and other platforms, forcing SSL is a toggle. It’d be nice for many to have a UI that writes to the .htaccess file in users’ behalf. Here are some examples:

  • Force SSL
  • www or no www
  • Caching policies
  • Gzip
  • Security headers
  • Block reading the .htaccess file.

On start page it would be nice to have a new Tab. “My Project Templates”

I have a few websites I maintain I build and I have a few starter projects I maintain buried on my documents folder would be nice to have a quick access to them. To be honest I have never used anything in the examples tab

Hey @scottsteven,

I like this idea. I wonder if a “Favourites” tab could work. e.g. You can add whatever projects you like to it. So we’d have, something like this: Recent | Favourites | Examples.

Projects could be favourited from the “Recent” list or perhaps added via the file dialog.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers
Dan

I think the same option like you have in Microsoft Office to create a excel / word template, which will automatically create a new project from an existing one (and not overwrite the original one when saving).

That would be excellent I can store the project files I have bought and or created. I work this way to limit the massive amount of change requests from clients. Sometimes its almost impossible to deal with some of them when they have too many choices it goes back and forth seemingly for ever.

I am one of those people, too! … just purchased RW two days ago. Thankful for this helpful Forum

How about a new and improved manual for RapidWeaver 9
Not sure how I forgot to add this to my first post.

Yes, this would be great

Hello!

Hope to see a better documentation and teaching videos. Rapidweaver is a plugin addict.
Expect to see a new RapidWeaver less addict with more features.

Brace yourselves, this could be a long post…(mods feel free to move this if it’s a bit too long and involved for this thread).

I said before that an update to the UI of RW should be looked at, so rather than just saying it should happen here are a few ideas.

For reference I use a MacBook Pro 13" with occasional usage of a 24" monitor.

So here’s my usual view of RW 8

It’s a bit squashed in places and could do with a better melding of item selection and changing the settings of that item. For example lets start with the very basics of adding pages.

You click up top and Add a page type, yeah! The page is then added to the Pages sidebar on the left, great. Now I want to change some aspects of that page, oh I now have to go to the far right to access those options.

Why not have something like the infrequently used sections from the RHS (I’m looking at you General Settings - Page Sidebar - HTML Code - Meta Tags - and Page Styles). The only tab that would remain on the right would be the Page tab.

So what would I do with all the others? Why not have a simple access button/icon next to the Pages which would then slide open a window that would replace the main and Page tab on the screen with all those options. Forgive the art skills but hopefully this picture give you a better idea of what I’m thinking

image Once pressed the i symbol launches this

I know not everything is there, it’s more just to give an idea of the setup.
Maybe add Save/Cancel buttons for the settings? Click on the i symbol and this window disappears again.

Speaking of the Pages side bar, rather than having a button in the top toolbar area could we have a strip that covers the whole length and performs a simple show/hide function?

What about the RHS Page Tab?
Haven’t forgotten it. As it is an area that can have more obvious effects on page appearance/function I think it is a good section to keep separate and visible more that the Page Sidebar. In fact with the other tabs removed this could allow more space to improve things like Stacks control layouts? @isaiah I imagine this would be a load of work and probably break things galore but if you had the whole RHS area to play with could this work better for stacks layouts? Have a tab for general/common stacks controls and a separate one for controls unique to that stack. It would certainly reduce the amount of scrolling up/down for the more complicated stacks.

Also @dan and @isaiah, do you both need to use very similar eye icons for differing functionality?
image
Dan the pen and eye options kind of work but maybe something different is needed? I admit a simple Stop and Play looks very effective on other programs but understandably you may want something different. Pencil for Edit and a TV/Monitor for preview?
Isaiah as the function in Stacks is show/hide how about something like a theatre curtain or a pair of sunglasses? Weird ideas I know but as you are both using very similar symbols for different outcomes, so some differentiation would be better.

Whilst I remember, some UI consistency in RW would be good. Take these 4 buttons
image
Projects and Resources open windows that have to be closed using the opened windows’ own close option. However, the Themes and Snippets windows can both be closed by pressing the Themes or Snippets buttons again. Odd.

Work Flow
A bit more rearranging here but for me it’s a bit late in the day, so i’ll try and write more on that tomorrow.

Thanks, if you’ve made it this far!
Paul
