Clickable Links on an image

Hello,
I need to make several areas on an image into clickable links to associated info pages.
Imagine a picture of a face. If the user clicks on an ear he would be taken to the info page about the ear. Similarly if he clicks on the nose he would be taken to the info page about the nose. Similarly on a map you click on a town or region and are then taken to info pages about the town/region you clicked.
I was thinking about creating small transparent images and superimposing them over each target area, and making each of those transparent images clickable links.
Is there an existing method of doing this or do I have to reinvent the wheel?
Thanks.
David

Have a look at HotSpotsPro.

HotSpotsPro if you need the points of interest to be visible, with little borders or pin markers.

Or the ImageMapper stack if you want to create a traditional image map, with irregular shaped areas.
