FTP errors when uploading amended sites

Hi. I am getting to the end of my rope here. Why is it always a Friday afternoon?

Settle in for a long story: This morning I was examining this practices directory entry on the RIAS website and I saw that they had entered it as http, not https. It should have automatically resolved but I thought I would check. When I clicked the link, instead of getting the Home page I got a broken fragment of one of the minor pages and not even sure if it was a valid part of the current site. Navigation did not work. However, if I put the correct address into my browser up popped the home page as it should be. I notified the RIAS and they changed it to https and invited me to check. I did so and still got the broken bit despite a cache empty. I concluded there must be something wrong with the site, not the address URL on the RIAS site, so I had a check of the site in Rapid Weaver and clicked Publish, to see if that kicked the side of the problem and got rid of the fault. Before I got half way through the Publish I got multiple errors : Couldn’t sign in to your FTP server and if I clicked on the info boxes they were either: Operation was aborted by an application callback. URL: ftp://xx.xxx.xx.xx (my xs) or FTP: unknown PASV reply. URL: ftp etc. I do not know what either of these mean.

I asked my host if there were problems or if they had changed anything but they said not. So to try to narrow it down, I added a bit of news on another website on another domain https://www.crieffmuseum.org.uk and uploaded it and it did so without demur. I concluded it must be peculiar to the ara website to which the RIAS site links and began a painstaking examination of the whole set up though unconvinced I would find anything, seeing as it was working fine before. I logged into the FTP server with FileZilla and could see nothing wrong except that there is a folder added (by the host I assume) which contained something called “acme-challenge”. I had not seen this before but, for all I know, it could have been there for months and was benign. The host said they had not just changed anything. So began to get very frustrated.

Went back to the museum site and added a new page with four sub pages nested, for files access. Unlike the previous mod, this had an impact on the whole index file and all the pages lit up with a blue dot. When I tried to upload it I got the same error and it failed. So I am thinking there must be something in the modified index which is causing trouble. I have thought about logging back in with FileZilla and binning the index file and trying a new upload but, at the moment, people can still see the sites and I do not want to make even more of a mess of things and I am running out of ideas.

I am using the latest versions of RW and Stacks. The only changes to RW in the last few weeks have been upgrading Stacks and adding Source with base settings but I have been using RW a fair bit since then, so I do not think these changes will have had any impact. The host is in the middle of upgrading its LNS routers but I don’t see any reason why this would be an issue. So I was hoping these symptoms might look familiar to someone. The themes the web sites are using are both Flood by Will Woodgate but, again, nothing has changed and I see no relevance to the problem. The ftp and server settings are all correct and as they have always been and the actual internet connection has not failed (I get a notification of even the smallest blip) so what else have I not checked?

Thanks for reading.

Cheers

Drew

Hi Drew,

Not sure I understand(TL;DR), but it sounds like you are having a publishing issue?

I don’t know what “RIAS” is?

Anyway, Can you publish to a local folder?
If you can you could publish locally and use FileZilla since you got that to work.

It might be more helpful if you give is some screenshots of the error messages and the publishing settings along with the name of the host company.

You can also follow all the steps in this KB article, it tells you how to clear and get the support logs that might have more info.

Hi Doug. Thanks for getting in touch. Much appreciated.

The RIAS bit is probably a red herring and not much help now as it works fine since lunch: Not found

To answer your questions:

Yes, I have published locally and can put it up manually if needs be. I would rather get back to doing a little and often though.

I have tried relinking to the correct directory, the password and other settings are correct and I tried changing down to a fast upload.

The host company is Andrews & Arnold

I have verified all the checks and this is the tail of a long log showing the last upload attempt at the error point:

The message seems to be that EPSV and PASV both showed an error. I tried setting it for both to no avail but did not try active.

Thanks again

Drew

I have not changed any of the settings up to the point the problems occurred. The server has seemed ambivalent at times about the user name; sometimes it is cgstudio.uk and other times it is www.cgstudio.uk, I have sites answering to both. The path is correct but when I rest the path earlier it dropped the last / but I see it has now reappeared.

My best guess since the test works, the credentials are okay. The path is probably the issue.

Try clearing out the path and hit the browse button. It should come up with a directory list of where your login starts out. Then select the directory you belong in. You might see www first and then the ara.

Selecting it this way should come back with the correct directory name filed in.

Yep. Tried that. I have uploaded the changes by FizeZilla for now. I’ll have another go at AAISP on Monday. Thanks.

Still stuck folks :weary:

I am beginning to despair. The host assures me nothing has changed their end. The RIAS site error was their server stripping the sub path from the link, so all I have to go with is that since I upgraded Stacks and added (but not used) Source uploads no longer work. I have tried two different web sites today and these stall as well, same message. Any help would be really welcome. Thanks. Drew

I haven’t been able to find anything on there hosting services.

Was looking to see if they have a knowledge base.

In the knowledge base article above there’s information on contacting RealMac support.

Here’s a link to one of their support pages.
