Specifying Website Address

In Elements (like RapidWeaver) you have to specify the website address twice, once in Project Settings > General and then again in Project Settings > Publishing.

Given that you can setup different publishing destinations e.g. local and remote, it would be useful to give them different website addresses. However, this tends to conflict with the website address in Project Settings > General.

Would it be possible to either allow more than one website address in the General section or specify that it should use the website address in the Publishing section when publishing the website.

At the moment I have to use the same address in my local MAMP setup and on my remote production website. This means I can’t view both sites (local and remote) at the same time on the same Mac. I have to use my MacBook as an additional viewer for the remote site.

Can I bump this one up the list?

Still unclear as to why the website address needs to be specified in two places: General and Publishing? It seems to be some sort of hangover from Rapid Weaver Classic.

add it here https://elements.nolt.io

I thought we used the beta forum for reporting issues?

The list Brian mentioned is for making suggestions for future development of Elements (you can see it as kind of a wish list). The beta forum is still the correct spot for reporting issues.

That’s why I posted it here as I see it as an issue.

@dan Is this on the list to look at?

Yes, added a note to look at this when we re-do the publishing engine!

Five months later and bumping again.

Not yet addressed in the new publishing 1.03 AFAICS?

Having said that, as a test, I have changed the Web address in the the General settings so that it doesn’t agree with the setting for my local publishing domain name and it has published OK locally with no errors.

So is the General setting for Web Address now ignored in the new improved publishing setup? Searching the published site in my local folder, I can find no reference to the General setting Web Address? So what is it now for.

Hey @logrunner,

I believe this was fixed some time ago, but there’s still a bit of confusion around how the different settings work.

You can set the website address in the General settings. This acts as the default and is applied to all publishing destinations.

However, each publishing destination also has its own Website Address field. This serves as an override. If it’s left blank, the address from General settings is used instead.

We’re currently considering removing the website address from General settings entirely, so there’s only one place to configure it, making things simpler and more consistent.

Hope that helps to clarify things!

That does clarify things. :+1:

I think, either remove the website address from General settings (probably the best option) or add the word ‘Default’ in front of it which would indicate what it is for.
