I realise that Elements is still under development but I had often wished that RW had a version that worked on an iPad.
Are there any considerations for ever doing that?
With the new M4 iPads, they are definitely powerful enough although I suppose because of the underlying OS, this may have some issues.
As it is now, I do most of my work on the MacMini Pro and other times on the MB Pro but being able to work on the iPad would be good.
The Affinity products have done this and although some of the design elements need to be different on the iPad, most of the work can be done there.
personally cant imagine working with such a small canvas…I use a studio display and wouldn’t even consider working on even a MacBook …
I don’t see this as a replacement but a new opportunity. Let me explain: the Mac is in the office which is in the basement. I finish my work, I turn everything off, I even think about wiping the dust and I go up to have a coffee to take my mind off things, recharge my batteries, I sit on my couch, I have my iPad to read the news and bam an idea for my site… being able to work on it from the iPad (or iPhone) follows the inspiration which always tends to manifest itself everywhere except when I sit down in front of my Mac for the planned work session. Applications like Bear understood this very early and benefited from it. Affinity is another example. I have often mentioned the fact of being able to write and/or publish a blog article from my couch, it is I think a fairly common desire. I think that another development (admittedly, it’s really slow) will be the integration of the use of computers that we have at least 60 inches in the living room and that we hardly use: our TVs. It seems to me that their next step (apart from the rollable wallpaper-style screens) would be to be able to run our apps like Bear, Blocs, COD… hmm I digress… so why not Elements? I wonder what it would be like to build a component on your smart TV with voice recognition for a customized GPT… I bet for a @jscotta reply here
The 13" display is obviously not as convenient as my 5K 27" display but when you are are out, it is not really much of an issue. You just can’t have all the panels open at once.
You say you are relaxing, but I don’t believe you. Nowhere do you mention the preferred vintage and when you are sending bottles out to all of us!
Only the Realmac team knows what they are doing behind the scenes that would allow or disallow moving Elements to an iPad because of special requirements or restrictions (beyond screen size). And I’m pretty sure that they have a full plate, at the moment.
However, I have been clamoring for more MacOS apps to be moved in all their glory to the iPad for some time. As @martef86 pointed out, it is not a question of processing power, but there may be some iPad OS related issues because…Apple.
Yes, the screen size is smaller (especially the 11" and iPad mini). But, at least with he 11" and 13" iPads, they are not any different than laptop screens. So I don’t think that screen size is the issue. Yes, @Godber, I too prefer to work on much larger screens when I can. But as @Bruno alludes to, it is very hard to relax with a 27" screen on your lap while sipping a cognac. He did mention cognac, didn’t he? I think that the biggest issue will be accounting for the usage of finger/pencil gestures.
So count me in for an iPad version when Elements ships. I would love to ability to work on websites while out and about or just moving around the office or at a client’s place.
I’m finding that I’m using my iPad more and more, and that I now definitely look for applications where I can easily move my work between my MacBook Pro and various iPads. Having Elements on the iPad with iCloud support of documents would a really nice to have down the road.
if you are working on an iPad while out and about or sitting on the sofa you need look at your life style choices!!!
All a matter of perspective! With my iPad and the right tools (which GenAI greatly increased), I can work in much better and more varied locals than just sitting at my desk.
An idea for third party developers: create a support for cognac glass integrated on the side of the iPad. To balance, a second support for appetizers
I don’t want to risk spilling my cognac on the desk, it doesn’t look very professional.
I always find when you go to a restaurant with 50 items on the menu the food is a lot worse than the restaurant with 10 items…ie id rather have 1 very good application than 2 good ones
It reminds me of a sketch by a French comedian, Coluche, about laundry detergent advertisements. It was a time when we regularly saw promotions and advertising gimmicks. In particular, someone was offered to take their branded laundry detergent pack and replace it with two packs of a non-branded detergent. Coluche mocked this by saying imagine that the person accepted: Yes, yes, take my branded pack, and I’ll take your two packs of laundry detergent. I think that applies here too.
Since so much of the code is the same on both devices, I don’t think there will be that many problems with the two versions. Besides, I’ll quote the words of a certain @dan when asked why Elements was defaulting to the phone view, “mobile first”!
It appears possible given Blocs app has both iPad and iPhone native versions. So maybe it’s something for Elements down the road after the horse comes before the wagon.
I think @dan already vaguely mentioned a possible web version, so that would be accessible from other devices, maybe that will be the preferred approach?
so the code is the same on both devices…so there is an iPad version already!!!
Probably best to get the Mac version shipped first, before we start speculating about other platforms
No, that’s not how it works.
I know but I was quoting jscotta “Since so much of the code is the same on both devices,”
Probably an unpopular take here, but I hate web apps. There are too many reasons to go into here. But I hope that a web-based app is not where they are going.
