Missing alt text field

Since one of the latest Elements updates the “alt text” field has been removed from the media inspector. I now have no means anymore to add alt text to my pictures. I am using the WebP format for my pictures and while saving them (some or all) metadata are stripped from the files. Is it in anyway possible to add the alt text to the inspector again? Thanks in advance. Greetings, Bert Hendriks (website: https://www.robertleenders.nl, most pictures are in the “projecten” pages.)

Hi @Bert6789

There is a new “Alt” field in the Resource Info panel, see below.

You can add alt text for the image there and the Image component will automatically use it :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Ben. Thank you for your fast reply. Unfortunately that doesn’t work for remote sources… almost all of my pictures are stored in a folder on the server. Any other solution?

Ahh, I see. I’ll chat with the team internally and see if we can get a solution for this ASAP.

That would be real nice, thanks.

If you add the remote images to your project (it still leaves them on the server):

You’d then get access to the alt text field in the image inspector:

Does that help?

In all the images that have been added to a website, and the alt text that was added to them in inspector, it doesn’t appear they were migrated to the new space. does that mean we have to go through all the images and re-add alt text to every single image?? Where is the data for the original alt text location?

I have tried this for the first four images on this page: Robert Leenders Maastricht: maatwerk in stalen objecten and when I inspect those elements (after re-publishing) there is no alt text visible. When I inspect an image (nr. 9 on this page) that is published with the previous version (with the alt box in the media inspector) I do see the alt text. So this is not helpful…

I am trying to send you 2 screenshots (via links) but somehow they are not being accepted…

is the original alt text, the field that was on the image, somewhere still?

My site has hundreds of photos that I have put alt text on. Is this alt text still out there somewhere that can be accessed?

Where does this ALT text actually show up? whats it for?

It’s the alt text for images. it was in the inspector where the image is. it was moved to it’s own location in one of the updates. but All the images on my site have alt text and now none of them do.

I know where it is in the editor but where does it show up on a website? whats its point?

Alt Text is an accessibility function. It was added (and now generally required in some statutes) for those who are blind using Web sites. If your site doesn’t have Alt Text, it will grade poorly on SEO. All images should have Alt Text that describes the image.

Ta..I dont need my site to be compliant to SEO as its only for me and my friends to view at the moment.

When you look at picture nr. 9 on the same page (the first one with the crane) and then inspect that element, you see the alt text that was entered into the (old) media inspector.

alt text significantly helps with SEO. Because search engines cannot “see” images, they rely on alternative text to understand what the image is about and how it relates to the rest of your webpage.
