Photo download in Gallery

Hello,

Is it possible to make the photos Not Downloadable in Gallery/Photo album or any Gallery ?

Thanks,
Norman

@zyb255 , there are stacks that claim to protect your images for download. Maybe they make it a bit harder, but you must consider that in the end every image in any website is downloadable on the internet.

Hans

I agree with @Panans.

For better protection, you may want to consider putting your gallery on a members-only page, where you need a password to access that page.

The most popular and most robust solution for that is Vibralogixā€™s Sitelok.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.
In the previous website of my company when you twofinger tap or right click to download a photo/image from the Gallery you will see a dropdown message that
says : " this page says Function Disabled " or sometimes " Function Disabled "
and you wont be able to download. unless there are other ways to do it.

I dont know what the web designer did.

Let me know,
Thanks,
Norman

@zyb255 , obviously I donā€™t know what your web designer did. He/she could have used Image Safe Stack (see my previous answer) or something like Protect or Defender. As you surely know, itā€™s always a good idea to start with https://rapidweavercommunity.com in search of solutions.

These stacks make it harder or impossible to download images and/or texts directly from your website. But in the end there are ways to download every image on the web. Search engines may show your images in results and they may be downloaded there, software such as SiteSucker can download an entire site including Resourcesā€¦

You can ā€˜protectā€™ your copyright by adding a watermark to your images. But nothing is 100% waterproof on the internet.

Cheers,

Hans

Nothing can make it impossible and for the person who steals it doesnā€™t even make it harder.

Disabling browser functionality is a terrible practice, for your users. For example thereā€™s a whole lot more options when you right-click an element on a page other than the download image option. When you disable that function, you disable all the other options as well.

Just because you donā€™t use theses options there are many users that do. And have you given any thoughts about the impact on accessibility? And all for a false sense that it somehow prevents someone downloading an image, when in fact it doesnā€™t.

The way Internet browsers work is - if you can see it, itā€™s already been downloaded. In all modern browsers a simple keyboard shortcut and I can have access to every resource on the page with the built in developer tools. Thereā€™s also a number of browser extensions out that block the ā€œdisable right-clickā€ function from working. You can bet that the type of person that steals images have that extension installed.

But most thieves just grab everything off your site with a simple Python script or similar. Thereā€™s even commercial programs (i.g. SiteSucker) that grabs everything from every page on a site.

If you want to ā€œprotectā€ images then put them behind a password protected page. Of course someone that has the password still can download it(with or without the disabling of the functions).

If itā€™s an image that you want to display and then sell, you might consider watermarking the images that are displayed and then when you buy you get the un-watermarked version.

@teefers , thanks for clearing this. For a good understanding, I used Image Safe once, years ago, until I understood itā€™s completely useless. I abandoned this Stack since. My suggestion to use these stacks was an answer at @zyb255 question. As you can see, I point out itā€™s not a waterproof solution at all.

Itā€™s up to Norman to decide what he wantā€™s to do. Hiding your site behind a protected page may not be what he intended. I have not seen his website, nor do I know what heā€™s offering.

I understand it can be frustrating to see your work (images, drawings,ā€¦) pups up in various locations without your permission. It happened to to me as well, several times. Add a watermark or a signature is the only thing you can do.

Cheers,

Hans
