I have noticed that in the latest BETA when the navbar is being setup it is first drawn as what looks like the mobile dropdown, before becoming the right shape. Not the best description. It does not look good. Is this a bug or expected behavior?

Oh that certainly looks like a bug, and I agree, it’s not too pretty to have the mobile menu flashed on load. I’ve added it to the list to get fixed — @bon might be able to share more details on this one.
the issue here is that the javascript that is controlling the display of the mobile menu takes a second to load, which is why you’re seeing it for a split second.
Not to worry though, I have a fix for this that’ll be included in the next beta
