Errr message when publishing

i use rapidweaver8 on a mac to build my website, and publish it using the Built-in publishing tool within rapidweaver.

However get the following error message:

MULTIPLE INDEX FILES FOUND ON YOUR SERVER
RapidWeaver noticed that you have the following files on your server: index.html, and index.php
Having multiple index files can causes issues when loading your website. We recommend using an FTP application to remove redundant index files.

WORSE YET, IS THE NEW PAGES I HAVE CREATED, ARE NOT LOADING CORRECTLY

I host with Machighway and received the following response:
Hello John,

Upon checking, I have found an index.html file as well as index.php file in the document root, which is causing the error. We infer that index.html is the default website page and index.php was loading a password protected page and we could that you have setup password authentication rule in your .htaccess file. The best way to resolve the issue is to check with your content developer and make sure to set up priority for index.html file or index.php file as the default page when loading your domain or remove either of these as per the requirement. The lines of code in your .htaccess file will be as:-

“Directory Index index.html index.cgi index.php”

The following code will give priority to your index.html file and it will load first before your index.php file. If you removing these files, you can republish your website files after this.

If you have any further queries or issues, feel free to let us know. Wishing you a good day.

I do not have any password protected pages ( i did years ago when i used RW5 - but this has plagued me since.

look forward to resolution

The short answer;
You publish the page, more than likely it was the default .html version.
Then, you added something to the page that required php and published creating a .php (it could be the opposite, but I doubt it)

Using your ftp app or your file manager on your hosting account, delete the .html file. - or - look at the file date and delete which ever version is the oldest.

thanks for the reply
so per the hosting service recommendation: The best way to resolve the issue is to check with your content developer and make sure to set up priority for index.html file or index.php file as the default page when loading your domain or remove either of these as per the requirement.

so for rapid weaver the index.php file would be the default?

can i delete all the files in there, rename the folders correctly and then republish?

It’s not the folder name but the file name (index. by default) you can set the default to php in the project settings, but that would only change new pages. You would have to go into the page inspector and change the file name there.

There is really no need to make server changes. As long as you just have one it will work(some can be php, some html, just not both)

Hi again Scott,

so went to the /public_html on my cpanel
(pardon my ignorance, but i have ‘enough knowledge to be dangerous’

in the /public_html there is a long list of folders and files.
the index.php file has a "last modified date from 2012, and the index.html file is from March 22, 2020 – does this matter?

looks like there are also older rapidweaver version pages, like the qt-4, etc., as well in there- any reason not to remove them from the public_html folder

  1. if I go to a page in rapid weaver edit mode, and i look at General Settings > Meta Data, the filename says index.html ---- are these the project settings you are referring to?

john

hi scott,
any ideas?

RapidWeaver doesn’t delete anything from the web server(that’s a good thing).

If everything on the server came from RapidWeaver, then you should be able to delete everything(after backing up of course) and republish all files. If you are using warehoused images or a CMS then you’ll need to manage that stuff manually.
