Switching to https question

Switching my hosting company and redoing my website as https versus the current http site. Though the new host will add a redirect, should I eliminate the old site the same time as uploading the new https site, or should I let them overlap for a short time? Concerned about overlapping because of the duplicate content Google penalty. I am adding the https site to Google Console. Right now my current site ranks high for keywords, and am concerned about losing that high rannking. Any suggestions?? Thank you folks!

Redirects as soon as new site is ready.
Check the each page of new site for mixed content (https://www.whynopadlock.com). Once you do the redirect it doesn’t matter if the old site is there or not, because no one can get to it.
