Lines that start with a # are comments. The max-age that follows the comment is what sets the value (in seconds). You can set it to any number you like.
Keep in mind that a shorter time may seem better but can be bad for the user’s experience. Hopefully, your site is interesting enough that visitors will want to browse around for a while.
You set it to short and they’ll have to wait around (or worse, leave) while files reload from the server. Unless you change images constantly (multiple times a day) a shorter time won’t benefit you and can create a poor user experience.
