Seems ok now - I blame aliens !
RW v8.0.3 seems to have cured the problem. SiteMap marked changed publishes fine now. No more crashes.

I’d love to take credit for this one, but it wasn’t me!!! 
I think it turns out that it was just a bug in the RapidWeaver publishing engine somewhere – something that only SiteMap seemed to trigger. It seemed associated with very specific settings (which is why this always worked for folks like @1611mac) – but right as I was about to get to the bottom of what the issue was RW v8.0.3 came out… POOF 
GONE!!!
Oh, well, I’m glad it’s working well for everyone now.
