Sometimes I would like to adjust the brightness of the overlay depending on how bright the individual images are themselves. If a photo doesn’t need any text it seems like I probably wouldn’t need to rely on an overlay at all. I don’t see anywhere to over-ride this.

No. Go to the Page Styles panel for the page you want to change and uncheck ‘Use Master Style’. You can then adjust the overlay type and filter.

Oh I see, I was pretty sure unchecked that but yes it is working now. I love how you can easily change the link text too as the image underneath it gets lighter and darker! I can also make it match the image better that way. Pretty cool!
