RSNn Contact-us email using FreeStack Contact Plus stack still not arriving

Image 1

In this image you’ve created a custom group. The stack groups are shown in the dark bar on the left side of that image. The folder-shaped icon at the bottom is your custom group which you’ve titled My Freestack Group

Everything in that picture seems to be working great. :+1:

Image 2

I’ve added a few numbered footnotes here – see below for explanations.

This image shows your main stack library. The main library shows all(1) your stacks and your library has a number of FreeStack items from Charlie Lockhart. In this image we can also see that your library is sorted by Tag(2). Unfortunately the FreeStacks don’t have any tags(3) – so there is no way to sort them. Stacks puts all the items that have no tags into an their own section and labels them “Ungrouped”. (4)

It looks like everything is working exactly as expected here too. :+1: – Although the meta info in these stacks is missing – that’s the way FreeStacks have been for a long time – I mentioned this previous above

Here are the footnotes:
  1. The main library shows all your stacks by default, but it doesn’t have to. You can change what types of stacks are displayed. The settings for this are the first thing you see in the Stacks Preferences.

  2. The default for the library is to sort it by Tag. However you can change the sorting order. Click the gear menu at the bottom of the library and choose Arrange Stacks
    By Author
    or
    By Title
FreeStack does appear to have the Author info set. So you could sort by Author and I think these stacks will be sorted into a Charlie Lockhart section.

  3. I’m not sure why Charlie never added any tags to his FreeStack product. :man_shrugging: You’ll have to ask Charlie about that one. Most developers have added a few tags to their stacks. It’s a useful thing, so why not!?

  4. The tags of each stack are set by the developer. Usually they contain some useful meta info about what the stack does or what type of stack it is. (e.g.: “Layout” or “Pictures” or “Footnotes”). The main library (when arranged by Tag) is grouped into sections – the section titles are the “primary tag”, which is just the first tag. You can also click on any tag to create a quick group of all of that sort of tag – it’s like a one-click search. Nice!
As I mentioned previously, none of the meta info inside a stack (title, author, help URLs, and tags) – none of those sorts of things are user-editable – they’re all a static built-in part of that stack.

I hope this helps explain some of the inner workings. If you have any specific questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Isaiah

Ah, it’s now very clear. Thanks a million for the explanation Isaiah.

Hi Cris,

Your problem is happening because you are using an older version of the FreeStack theme and stacks. As discussed with you at length on previous support requests you submitted to us, you need to update to the latest version of the FreeStack theme even if it will require you to rework some of your site pages. Doing so will fix your display issue in the Stacks library window and then sort by either Author or Tag.

Also once you update FreeStack, use the FreeStack Contact Plus form stack and your form will work as expected. Your hosting company must be using a current version of php on your server too.

Best,
Charlie

Thanks Charlie, I appreciate your response. I don’t think I’ve touched RapidWeaver in well over a year and my previous GoogleGroups query about using FreeStack was June two years ago.

I’m now using RW6 in Yosemite in my new MacMini so I’ve checked for updates and RW6 reports that having updated to Stacks-3 and some others, I’ve updated everything. Are the BlueBall FreeStack theme and stacks upgrades ones I will need to purchase and if so, exactly what needs upgrading?

What am I doing wrong? Why isn’t RW6 telling me some of the BlueBall addons are obsolete and which ones need upgrading?

I have your FreeStack original theme and FreeStack Responsive as well as their stacks along with some extras, I seem to recall. How do I find out what I need to update since RW6 is NOT telling me any of them are obsolete? Have they all been updated or only some of them?

And how do I find out the changes I’ll need to make since you seem to be saying your upgrades are not backwards compatible - you say they “will require you to rework some of your site pages”.

Cris

Aha! That makes so much more sense!

Sorry for saying that you hadn’t added those tags Charlie. My bad. I should have known better.

You have to forgive me it’s been so long since the Tags were added. I either had to assume that the customer had a very very old version. Or that you hadn’t updated in a very very long time. Both seemed equally unlikely.

Thanks for chiming in and setting me straight.

What am I doing wrong?

It’s probably not you. But updating (potentially) hundreds of stacks from a dozens of different developers – in a timely way – without slowing down your system… well, it’s not an easy thing. Sometimes it doesn’t go perfectly.

In the case when something seems amiss – like this case – its a good idea to double check version numbers. If you find your installed copy is behind, just uninstall your copy – and download and install the new one direct from the developer.

Some possible reasons why updaters fail (in order of likelihood):

  • It doesn’t support updates
Some stacks – especially ones that have a closely related theme may not support auto-updating. Updating themes and stacks together can be tricky – so developers opt just to email out updates to registered users.

  • A bug
Sometimes there’s simply a bug in the stack: e.g.: a typo in the update URL
This can prevent updates – and since the only way to fix that bug is to get an update – Catch 22. The only solution is manually updating to the next version. Then you’re good to go.

  • The update server moved
Sometimes developers move their update server. If your copy is so old it still points at the old location then it may not be able to find the new server. In this case, just updating once manually gets you back on track.

  • They’re so old they predate automatic updating.
I believe auto-update was introduced in 2011 Stacks v2 – but honestly it’s been a very long time, so i’m not 100% positive. But if you have stacks from before that time (ok, not very likely, but worth mentioning) then you’d need to update manually.

  • Corrupt stacks in your library
This is quite rare, but a couple times I’ve found updates (among other things) failing when a corrupt file was installed into the Stacks library. The corruption was so severe that it manages to incapacitate the Stacks automatic updater in some way. In this case – when nothing will update at all ever – then some amount of divide and conquer – installing/uninstalling your addons and re-testing a few times in order to suss out the culprit. This is exceedingly rare however, so not worth considering until you need to cross that bridge.

Thanks Charlie, Isaiah, Karn, Scott and all for your help. I’ve now upgraded RW6 and its stacks to what I think is all the latest versions.

But version 8 (my 8th attempt!) of my RSNn contact form is still not delivering the contact email to my inbox although when I send an email to the same contact-us address (RSNncontactus@reducestressnow.net) using my email client Thunderbird, it is delivered to me. It’s a Stacks-Page using my original theme RSNn-StacksBBox. The only stacks it uses are 1-Column, Text, HTML, and FreeStack-Contact-Plus.

So there is something still wrong somewhere, but what?

This latest contact-us-8 page looks fine in RW6/Preview, as did previous versions, it looks good and looks the same when published as: www.ReduceStressNow.net/contact-us-8 and gives the correct response in green: “Thank you. We have received your request and will reply to you soon.”

Any suggestions why this is still not working?

all help gratefully received.

Is the account you are sending from on the same domain? Most hosting providers require that now.

Good question, Scott. I originally thought this might be one of the reasons it’s not working, as you said earlier.

Yes, the site is www.reducestressnow.net and the email address I’m sending the contact-form info is to RSNncontactus in the same reducestressnow.net domain. Email addresses and domain names never seem to mind whether or not they contain capitals - which immensely increases readability…

I would inquire with your hosting provider then. They should be able to see the logs and tell you if the mail is hitting the server and where it is going.

That is the email address you are sending to. @swilliam asked about the email account you have configured the email to be sent using, or from. That part is critical; ensure that the email account you are sending from is native to your domain, password is correct and the account is log-in-able and viewable from whichever email user interface is provided/recommended by your hosting company.

Thanks klaatu, but I’m not sure I understand your post. I did configure the contact form to send every email it sends to RSNncontactus in the same reducestressnow.net domain. This is NOT the individual email address I specify as the form completer…

But I have sent an email from my email client Thunderbird to the same RSNncontactus in the reducestressnow.net domain and this email did arrive. This arrival means, I think, that the contact form email address has not only been correctly specified, it is indeed valid. Check?

I’m now wondering how come this contact form page worked in RW5 and yet now I’m using RW6 with all its stacks updated, it has stopped working…

Thanks in advance for all and any help to resolve this now urgent problem.

What we are trying to find out is NOT the email you are sending To but the email address you are sending From.

Show a screen shot of the form layout UI.

Good idea, here’s the screen shot of the RW6 Contact-us edit page.

the latest version of this contact-us page is published to: http://www.reducestressnow.net/contact-us-8/

And here’s the screenshot of the test email sent from Thunderbird to the email address preset in the RSNn Contact Us page showing that the preset RSNn email address works since I did receive this email…

your response very much appreciated,
warm regards, Cris

Hi, I’ve received an email to my RSn/contact-us address, tried to reply to it, but my reply bounced. see attached

Was this one of you testing the email address, if so please confirm.

Thanks it arrived so it is a good address. warm regards,
