I use RW 8 and my website is built using “Artful” theme.
I have hidden the site banner from each page. However, when I sent a friend my website address as a DM on Instagram it showed the generic banner photo!! I’m not sure what’s happening! I went back to make sure in each page the banner photo is blank. Look forward to solving this mystery with some help.

Have you added the image you’d like to appear when people share your site on social media into the Social Tags image well? Try that for each page, re-publish and try sharing the link again.
Hi @Ash , as far as I can see the only thing you can do in this theme is to uncheck ‘show’ banner in the Theme Settings. If you did this I can’t imagine what goes wrong here.
Artful Theme has limited possibilities…

@Panans - sadly yes, I have already done that.
@robbeattie - I don’t have a social media image. I just tried that. And then went back to Instagram and tried sending my website link as a DM. Nope, it didn’t solve the problem. I’m thinking of adding a banner photo to see if I have more control over it if I actually added one!!

I don’t know about If this might be the problem, but many social media companies cache images.
They don’t go out “live” every time and check your site for what may have changed.

If I remember Instagram (owned by Facebook) uses the cached version from FB.
FB (and mst social media) will choose an image if you don’t.

I don’t fully understand your message- first of all, I’m not using Facebook. Then, this problem is only when I share my website as a message on Instagram. If it were pulling an older work image from the cache I understand. But here it’s pulling the “generic template image” from the artful theme!! It’s so weird- when I send the message, a random person’s face comes up!!! I even tried adding a banner image on my homepage , but that didn’t help. Next Im going to try and add a banner image on each page and see if that helps
Instagram is owned by FB, so my understanding is that they use the FB cached sites.
They will choose an image for you if you don’t tell them what image to use.
Even though you don’t see the default template image on the site, it obviously still got published.

Yeah you do,
Settings one up is free and you don’t have to use it for anything else.
I usually setup separate social media accounts for each client to do nothing but this kind of stuff.

If you have the changes ready anyone who has a FB account can use the tool for you.
You can post your URL here and someone else can hit the Scrape Again button for you.
You can wait for FB(Instagram) to rescrape on there own, but I have one site that hasn’t been done since January 12, 2018 at 2:41 PM. It’s a test site that doesn’t get any activity,but still be prepared for a long wait.

The banner image is still being published to your pages, which seems odd if it’s turned off:
I just tried a test project with Artful theme, and found the same results.
