RW8 questions from a Newbie

Recently started creating my website eloveution with RapidWeaver 8, and I am running into learning curves

  1. How do you add social media links to Elixir template? It seems only to allow Twitter and even with that I struggle as newbie to get that to work, I have five (5) social media links to add.
  2. With the Elixir template how do you make the banner become smaller in height only, it takes up a large part of the web page?
  3. Any links to video resources for newbies to RW8 would be helpful.
  4. I do not use Foundry or Stacks yet, just hoping to create a temporary 4 page site for now.
Thank you in advance for your patience while I learn. In a month or two I plan on upgrading to Classic  Jennifer from eLOVEution

Which “Elixir template” (I think you’re meaning a ‘theme’) are you using
?

Sorry for the delay in responding. Please accept my apologies. Yes, I do mean theme for Elixir. Does that help?

Jenn

Hi Jennifer, no problem. Ok, but which theme exactly from Elixir do you mean? He is offering several completely different themes. We must know this to be able to eventually help you. (Premium themes for RapidWeaver)
Tagging @Elixir (the developer)

LOL (DUH) for me  I believe there is Tesla and Voyager in Elixir. I think I chose Tesla. I am 100% a newbie to RapidWeaver, I have worked with Squarespace and other template based site creating software.

How could I know for sure I chose Tesla?

Jenn

Both the Voyager and Tesla themes are built-in RapidWeaver themes made by Elixir Graphics. They do not have the social media badges feature.

Voyager Pro and Tesla Pro themes have the social media badges feature, however they are not built into RapidWeaver. You have to purchase them from Elixir’s website and then install the theme in RapidWeaver.

Are you asking about the free built-in themes from Elixir Graphics (Voyager and Tesla), or are you asking about the paid upgraded versions of those same themes (Voyager Pro and Tesla Pro) that you have to buy from Elixir’s website?

You can check the theme you’ve set for the project in RapidWeaver’s theme drawer:

You can also check each page’s selected theme via the Page Inspector panel:

I see I have to purchase Tesla pro in order to add social media. I didn’t realize when I purchased RapidWeaver that there were so many extra’s to buy in order to create a website. For example, stacks and Foundry and now this acquiring pro versions of a theme. I inner-stand people need to make money for their work, that said, having that information upfront I would have made sure I had the total amount of money for all things required. It is possible this was stated somewhere on RapidWeaver website when I purchased RW8, I guessed I missed it

I wanted a simple, quick website with links and social links, blog and gallery until I could buy stacks and Foundry, then upgrade to Classic. I am in a bit of a catch 22 income is required in order to get the extras. LOL

One of the reasons I use Affinity Software, what you buy is what you get, no subscription, I moved away from Adobe after they went to monthly/yearly subscription. Old school, years ago you purchased creative software outright, it was yours.

Thank you for answer my question, sorry for the rant. I guess for me, for now there will be no website.

Sending oodles of love to all here in Rabidweaver land.

Jenn

Jenn

Yeah, we are working on reducing that friction, stay tuned for the upcoming RapidWeaver Elements.

Our products are the same. With the newer pricing you are only “subscribing” to 1 year of app updates. The license is valid forever however. You can continue to use the app for as long as you like with full functionality. We go over the way our subscription model works here.

You can have all that with both RapidWeaver 8 and RapidWeaver Classic. No need to buy extra stuff.

Not necessarily, there are always workarounds. It might take a bit of manual work to embed Social Media icons on those built-in themes and it might not be in the footer like on the Pro versions, but you might be able to get some embedded. For example you could use Font Awesome, they have a bunch of Social Media icons, and you can use their free CDN if you sign up for a free account with them.

If you’d like to explore that option, we run a weekly Office Hours session you can join. It’s a live session that you can join via your web browser to get help in real-time. Feel free to join a session if you want to give it a try. :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers Dan G,

Thank you

  1. Cool about RapidWeaver Elements I signed up for notification when it’s available.

2, Maybe I picked the wrong theme for what I need in RW8?

I wish to create a four page website,

Home, Talks about eLOVEution, how to create a conscious creative life, a link to my Redbubble shop to buy illustrated product, Social Meida links and I would like to add images on the page.Connect for eLOVEution coaching.

What Love Says (Blog), This page is a blog dedicated to a daily illustrated series with channeled messages inspiring people to be lovingly consciously aware in their lives, this series appears everywhere in social media now, I wish to post on the website first. Social links on this page as well.

Gallery, is for logos, illustrations created, some examples of how others were assisted.

Connect, I can use the basic contact form that’s fine. that said, adding social links there would be great.

  1. What are the workarounds to embed social media icons on Tesla (Elixir)? I am okay with them not appearing in header or footer. I prefer it when I can add custom illustrated social icons
Is there an easy way to access video tutorials for Tesla non Pro? For example, I would imagine that without stacks and foundry you cannot ad random images to a page layout? Is there a work around for that? That answer would also work with my desire to add custom social media icons.

So a basic example of that in RapidWeaver using the Tesla theme might be:

Home page - Styled Text
Blog page - Blog
Gallery - Photo Album
Connect - Contact Me

You can use your own custom illustrated social icons in place of those standard ones. :slightly_smiling_face:

The above is using built-in tools/functionality, no other purchases required.

Cheers Dan G,

This is very cool and great to see, very helpful. Does this mean I would place the code you suggested in the sidebar only my .png info and the links for each social media account?

In order to adjust the pages in Tesla as it is, I would need to write code or have code? For example to add images to home page, or contact me for an example.

I have no problem learning new things, some code might be a stretch, although anything is possible. Any guidance on code?

Thank you

Jenn

Aside from the social media icons, no you wouldn’t need to know or write any code to add other images to the page. You can drag and drop images into a Styled Text page and Blog page. Check out the links I provided in my last comment, they show you the things you can do with each page type.

After reviewing those docs if you have other questions, let us know.

Cheers Dan G,

I didn’t realize those were active links. I looked at one of them, it’s for RW Classic and I am using RW8, Styled Text doesn’t appear in RW8.I probably cannot do the things you suggested unless I have RWClassic? This is my last question for now

Jenn

Sure about that? :slightly_smiling_face:

If you don’t see the built-in pages in RW8, make sure they are all selected in the settings:

All the pages from RW8 carried over to RWC, so you can use the same documentation to learn how to build a site using those pages in RW8.

I see you purchased RW8 back in 2021. If you need any help getting started I’d encourage you to join some of our weekly Office Hours sessions ← (this is a link). We’d be happy to help you get started if you have any questions you’d like to ask us over a live session. :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers Dan,

I meant to thank you for all of the information and previous help. I have created a website successfully connected to my server, we just checked that, which is great. However, when I go to publish I get an error message about the blog.

The error message reads: Invalid Enclosure You need to provide a podcast file or a size in the Advanced
panel for the ‘What Love Says
Blog’ episode.

Not sure what I need to do I have nothing to post on the blog yet, is there something I may have missed when creating the page?

Your wisdom is appreciated.

I am using RapidWeaver 8

Do you have the iTunes tab enabled?

Check that, not sure it should be enabled if you aren’t including any podcasts in your posts.

If that’s not it, can you send your project file and addons folder over to our support email per our guide here How do I share my project file with Realmac Support for troubleshooting?

Cheers Dynamic Dan

Thank ypu for this and all that you do. I added a post to my blog page, that allowed me to publish the site. Here is for your reference, I look forward to buying Elements or at least upgrading to Classic soon.

Here is the website you assisted me with, it’s basic but it works for now. https://www.eloveution.com/

How do you make the sidebar I have social media links there so each icon has more space between them and they are smaller on mobile device? I promise my last question

Oodles of love

Jenn

All websites have humble beginnings, the design looks great and I’m sure as you add more content to it, it will find its audience. :slightly_smiling_face:

Not sure I understand the question. It looks like you are using the Future theme. You can adjust the sidebar size in the settings here.

You might have to play around with both the main content columns and the sidebar content columns sliders, along with the Maximum Width field to get the sizing the way you want it.

Ask as many questions as needed, it’s what the forum is for. :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers Dan,

For some reason, now this could be I need to update my OS I am running Catalina, when I look at the actual sidebar with the social media icons it only shows on the home page when I first open the website to work on it. They disappear after that and I cannot alter them, unless I close out and open it up the website again. That’s weird isn’t it.

Thank you for the info, I am thinking maybe I need to update my OS, your thoughts?

Jenn
